We recently connected with Justin Crawford and have shared our conversation below.
Justin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I have been a full time tattooer for over a decade, when you first get into the industry you are an apprentice and you’re not making money, so I had to work a few night jobs so I could still pay my bills and eat, but I wanted to tattoo so badly I didn’t mind doing it and I believed it would only be temporary until I was able to start doing tattoos out of the shop. I worked as hard as I could to learn the basics of tattooing and how to work in a shop because all I wanted to do is tattoo. The process takes time but if you live and breath and put all of your free time and energy into your craft you can reach your goal!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have always been into art , since I picked up my first crayon. I never thought I would become a tattoo artist at a young age. My passion was drawn to comic books and comic book art. When I graduated high school I wanted to do something with my art but I wasn’t sure the right path to take. I knew from a very young age I wanted to get tattoos. I remember the very first tattoo I ever saw and it blew my mind that you could put art on your skin and it would stay forever! Once I did my very first tattoo I was addicted, all I thought about day and night was how can I improve and I was very lucky to receive an apprenticeship! Now that I have been a full time tattooer for a decade I never grow tired of it . I love the challenge and the want to always be growing. I enjoy working with my clients to create something they will love and be happy to show off to others! I feel very fortunate to have the job I have.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I believe the most rewarding aspect of my job is making a connection with a client and giving them a tattoo they love ! Something that makes them feel more comfortable in their skin and even have more confidence to tackle life.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My parents have always been very supportive of my art . My mission is to make my family proud of what I am doing and what I have done . So much has been sacrificed by others to allow me to be where I am and I just want to prove to my family and loved ones that it was all worth it!
