We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Justin Cooper a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Justin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned while working at a prior job?
As I began my entertainment career years ago, it often resulted in “paying dues” for little to no pay. To earn a living, I worked an array of jobs in the customer service sector.
Specifically, I worked as a customer service representative for one of the nation’s leading cell phone carriers. The company’s then internal mantra was “first call resolution,” meaning that as a representative, it was my duty to resolve the customer’s issue on one call so that they wouldn’t need to call back; they could trust me to resolve their issue.
Though the job was often thankless, and I was glad when that chapter of my life was over, I took that mantra of being customer service focused with me, and I use it to this day in servicing my global clients.

Justin , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Justin O. Cooper, CEO and Global Creative Executive of JOCMedia & Entertainment and KALEIDOSCOPE, a global creative consulting agency specializing in marketing communication solutions and film & television development and production company.
I got my start in media and entertainment as a published music journalist and publicist to Grammy-winning artist/actress Ann Nesby in the early 2000s.
Between then and now, I’ve lent my business and creative expertise and support to an array of corporate, entertainment, and non-profit campaigns and organizations over my 20-year career.
As a full-time entrepreneur, I solve the creative conundrums my clients face within marketing communications while tapping into my years of experience in entertainment while incorporating much of my music and film & TV industry know-how in delivering content to those I have the honor of serving. Providing stellar customer service is a part of the appeal and the experience my clients receive in working with me.
I’m most proud that the work we produce at JOCMedia has a global reach and impact.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I think maneuvering the unpredictability of the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 – early 2022 is a time that I and so many others had to pivot in business, career, and life in general.
As an executive with international business and clients, much of the work I was doing before the pandemic occurred halted, and I lost business and revenue as the days turned into weeks and then months amid travel restrictions and lockdowns. As a business owner, I had to adopt new processes, enhance my skills and expand my offerings to survive.
The uncertainty was challenging, but growing in the process made me a better person and strengthened the resolve of my business.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Working within the media, marketing, and entertainment space, providing messaging to promote our clients’ services, products, and offerings is a part of what we do. However, we haven’t implemented the same approach in the self-promotion of our business, as the good old tried and true “word of mouth” has worked well for us.
We’ve been fortunate that the work we produce for our clients gets the attention of other business units, and we are often referred by those we serve, yielding new business.
Since we are a small team slowly scaling, this works for us as we grow.
