We were lucky to catch up with Justin Collins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Justin, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The story behind my mission of helping 1 million people lose weight, change their mind, body, and live their best life actually comes from my mom who died of cancer over 10 years ago. Her entire life was based on giving to others, sharing her passions, and bringing positive energy to anyone she encountered. She faced many hardships with her health throughout her life but always prioritized others and giving to them in any way she could. When she unexpectedly died from cancer, I took time to process my life, her life and the meaning of it. Up until that point I noticed I wasn’t maximizing my life, and giving to others. Things were very one sided, I was looking to receive more. The shift happened when she passed as she gave me life, bringing me into the world, to give life during it, to when she passed she gave me the meaning of life, to give to others. From that point it all made sense. It’s not about me, it’s about THEM. Helping others to transform their life, creates a ripple affect. We all only get one life, and living it to our best should be the only option, and by me stepping up and leading, showing them how to, they can realize that reality and pass it on directly and indirectly inspiring others to do the same. .
Justin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Justin “JC” Collins and I am the CEO of Fitness by JC, a weight loss and body transformation program. We help clients lose weight, shift their mindset, and realize their true potential to live their absolute best life. My story, keeping it short, began post college by gaining almost 50 lbs. I had zero discipline, lack of commitment, and horrible accountability. This struggle lasted 8 long years of failed attempts to lose the weight. Finally with the final straw being my mothers passing, I made the full on commitment to honor her spirit of giving, to finally fully commit to lose the weight, and turn my mess into my message. With that I hired Rob Reed Fitness to teach me how to lose the weight, and change my life. Fast forward months later, I lost 45 lbs, and Fitness by JC was born. From that point, 1,500+ clients have come into the program and lost weight and reached their goal, and most importantly kept the weight off, and inspired others to do the same. This brings me the most joy seeing other people win, and making the decision to change their life, and thrive in ways they never imagined. A few things that I am proud of is that potential clients come to us to get results, and they walk away with exactly what they came for. Over delivering is the goal, and when clients see that you are even more invested than they are, they can’t help but fully commit and put in the work it takes to solve their problem, and create their solution to a healthier and happy life. I care deeply as I know what’s on the other side of the wall they haven’t been able to get past, and can relate on their journey as I have walked in their shoes and can support them as they learn to breakthrough to their next level,
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Yes. First, be yourself. 100% authentically you. It’s human nature to copy others, but the thing about that is they are already taken, and you’ll always be #2. Just be you, and you’re always #1. From there, share ALL of your story. Being on social media it’s easy to only share the wins and the highlight real. All that does is leads to people not trusting or relating to you. Share your losses, the embarrassing stories, the low points, aka tell the truth. This humanizes you and people can relate to that. Next, give. All day long. (Value) Make it a priority to tell your story and how you got where you are. Everytime someone comes to your page, you want to give them a reason to come back. So give to them in every way and help them change their life simply by following you. Tell them everything that worked, what to avoid, and be active in your comments, engaging with your followers, and responding to all messages. Remember, it’s about them winning, at all times. And lastly, provide “edutainment”. Everything should be educational and entertaining. Social media is like a tv show. If you give people the same old, they”ll move on. You want to create an atmosphere that is must see tv, and your followers never want to miss a moment. Make it fun for them, and they’ll make it fun for you by following, sharing, commenting, and eventually messaging you on how they can join your program and change their life.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
TWO big lessons that I had to unlearn was 1) you can’t out train a poor diet, and 2) don’t do it yourself, ask someone who has done it, how they did it, and if they can teach you. First, when I played college basketball, everyday I ate horribly. Fast food before and after games, pizzas, alcohol, and it was off set by being 19 and running thousands of miles a day on the court. Post college however, the hoops stopped and the poor diet kept going, which resulted in the almost 50 lb weight gain. That struggle continued for almost 8 years until I learned nutrition was the key. Because of that instance, I make it a point to help each client understand that when you go off the rails, you can’t just run it off. Be disciplined, follow your meal plan and keep “fun” meals in moderation, and you lose the weight and enjoy your life. Secondly, having struggled for 8 years and failing miserably at any weight loss attempt, I hired someone who knew how to help others lose weight. (Rob Reed Fitness) from there, he helped me learn how to, apply, and lose all the weight in a fraction of the time it would have taken me to do it alone. I was taught only what will help me, which avoided so many potential headaches as you don’t know what you don’t know. Being vulnerable and asking for help changed my health/fitness/life, so logically when I started my business, I hired a business coach, Michael Chu at Champion Development, who walked me through the same process, getting all my business affairs in order and time compressing the timeline of going from launch to success, which I am forever grateful for. Learning from others ahead of you with more knowledge is vital to success.
