We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Justin Chart. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Justin below.
Justin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Captivating. Intriguing. Evocative. Just a few of the words that describe the experience of listening to Universal Music Group artist Justin Chart. Chart is one of the world’s groundbreaking Alto Saxophone players with a warm and memorable melancholy sound that has the ability to transport you with a lucid, controlled and clean energy. He gracefully and without inhibition bares his soul in his music, inviting us to join him in experiencing a depth of emotions. Sometimes the journey is slow and sultry, other times it’s jaunty and irrepressible. An artist of intense vision who has developed his own sound and unique musical identity, Chart’s Saxophone playing is superb, passionate, and exquisitely in-the-moment.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Never a musician to chase trends, Chart’s hard bop vibe shows the brilliance of invention with pure soul, devoid of all pretentiousness, that is ultimately infectious, with staggering technique, and a mind for innovation. Known in West Coast Jazz circles as “The Blizzard” because of his explosive playing and intricate compositional changes, Chart is a fiery player with an endless supply of chops who is not afraid to push himself and his art forward.
Justin Chart is a highly praised soloist in Los Angeles. With performances and recordings throughout the world and a musical career that has spanned over four decades. He has amassed nearly 100,000 followers on Instagram and over 12 MILLION views on YouTube. His new album RIGHT ON! is available on all major streaming platforms, as well as a limited run of vinyl! A true Renaissance man, he reaffirms this credo on his 16th album as a Bandleader and an innovator.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Most Jazz musicians are taught to learn all of the standards and play what the masters played. That is fine for developing technique. There comes a time where you must find your own place in the sun. The issue is that they end up playing Coltrane note for note and the problem is they never develop and sound and style of their own. We already have a John Coltrane, we don’t need another copy.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to play the music I want to play. There is nothing better than feeling the audience being energized with emotion when they listen to my style of music, a sound that is uniquely my own.
