We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Justin Boyd a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Justin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
I had gone into photography by accident honestly. One day I went with a friend after school to take some photos around downtown Long Beach and something just clicked internally, I knew this was what I wanted to pursue. Since then, I haven’t looked back averaging at least 1-2 shoots a week. When I had realized my passion for photography could also sustain me finically, I’ve put my all into the craft. I was working at a restaurant at the time and just felt like I had no purpose. Photography gave me one.

Justin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Justin Boyd otherwise known as Jboydvisuals, which is just my first initial and last name followed by visuals. I had grown up more into sports, but photography helped me find my creative outlet. I started by going out and taking photos of the city, portraits of friends. I had got to a point where I felt confident enough to reach out to brands and slowly started building a portfolio. I specialize in portraiture, but also offer weddings, engagements, graduations, events, look books, product photography, maternity photos, corporate work, pretty much anything. I’m proud of myself for taking the risk to step into doing what I love and trusting the process.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Don’t shy away from opportunity. What I mean by that is to not be afraid to reach out to people or companies afraid of an answer not going your way or feeling like you aren’t big enough to meet the bar. No risk, no reward. A no now, doesn’t mean a no in the future.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Early into my photographer, I use to edit my photos on apps like VSCO. I hadn’t heard about lightroom or adobe creative suit at that point and I definitely wish someone would’ve pointed me to the elite editing software early on.
