Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Justin “Bass” Williams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Justin “Bass”, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Diving into producing meant becoming a musician first. I started learning percussion at 5 years old and it transform throughout the years. At 12 I picked up bass. I started writing and producing at 13. Took to singing and rapping at 17. But producing and engineering has always been the true passion. I wish I would have been more disciplined in the beginning because I could be farther along as a student of music now. I wouldn’t have had the problem of learning and remembering songs properly. It wouldn’t have taken so long to pick up bass. Who knows where my musicianship could be now? But that’s me not being satisfied and striving for more. The most important skill I got from the early days is to learn how to stay in the pocket.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well my producer/artist name is “Bass” as in Bass drum or Bass guitar. I am a producer, songwriter, musician. If music is involved then I’m involved. I started in this industry as a church musician first. Then became a travel musician for hire for different bands. I created Bassfinatic Productions in 2009. I provide tracks/instrumentals for artist to buy. I also provide engineering/mixing/mastering. I am still a gigging musician. I also compose lyrics and even record vocals if needed. I love every aspect of music I am pursuing but the producing is where I feel most at home. You can find me on Instagram: @bass_marley

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Rich man Poor Man changed my whole viewpoint on making money and the true purpose of its use. It made me look at life differently. I suggest any person looking to free their financial mind should read it
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
At the age of 22 I managed to start a record label. Had a few artist and things start to take off, but before I could see it come to fruition I ended up in the hospital with kidney failure. I was in the icu about a month unconscious. My parents I was told I wouldn’t make it. A lot happened and depression was bringing me down and I wasn’t letting anyone know, which is a bad ideal. I eventually got ok and now on dialysis and that mad me depressed. I couldn’t feel the urge to be a musician until one night my brother invited me to his house to hang and he played me some music he been working on and it gave me life. I told him God wanted me to head this and to move forward.
