We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Justin Bailey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Justin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on would have to be the album I’m working on now. Up until the point I decided to start a larger project I’ve released single after single, just trying to improve my writing and vocals, unconcerned about a larger body of work. Now that I’ve obtained experience performing, and countless hours in the studio I felt ready to tackle a bigger project. Doing larger projects like what I’m working on now allows me to envelope myself into the music, and it shows the world what I’m living and feeling. It’s my favorite way to express myself.
Justin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve always loved singing and writing ever since I was young, performing at school and in church plays but never really pursued music as a career until I was nudged in it’s direction by my good friend, who now happens to be the one mixing and mastering my tracks. He saw the potential I had, even when I didn’t. That’s when I truly became j.bailey (artist name). Through him, I met QUAZAR, the collective I’m now a part of today. I’m beyond grateful for the support I’ve gotten from the members of QZR (QUAZAR) and from family and friends. Without them I wouldn’t be where I’m at right now. I think what sets me apart from other artists is my versatility. I’m not glued to just one genre. I can give you pop, R&B, rap, you name it. What’s most important to me out of everything however, is pushing out quality music that brings my listeners joy. It’s the best feeling in the world to know that someone can relate to one of my songs and is probably the most rewarding feeling seeing someone react positively to my music.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think something that would benefit all artists would be more open mic nights and live music at bars and restaurants across the state of Michigan. Allowing artists opportunities to perform and master their craft is essential in our development. And who doesn’t love live music!?
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I have multiple goals that drive me to better at what I do. However I have two primary goals. One is to give quality music to people, give them something they enjoy whether it’s a love song, a sad song, a dance song and so on. And my second primary goal is to make this my living. To be able to get by on something I have a passion for, and love doing is really all I could ever ask.
