Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Justin Anyanwu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Justin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
If I were to do it all over again, I would have focused on building our brand and audience through story telling. Marketing a brand today is so expensive and ineffective. People are desensitized to advertising. A compelling and authentic experience is what people prefer. I would have started first by telling our story first before trying to sell anything.

Justin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Justin Anyanwu, I am one of three brothers behind the brand Boomslank. We started the brand after I realized my younger brother had a great talent for anime art. And at the time, he was quite miserable at a job as a Walgreens cashier.
Boomslank, our brand, is all about originality and uniqueness. And it’s an avenue that allows me to do something cool with my brothers. Unlike most other brands in the anime community, we focus on original artwork, we avoid leveraging licensed creations. My brother’s artworks are so highly detailed that it takes a while to create them, but that’s what draws in our fans.
I am most proud that I got my brother to quit his job at Walgreens and follow his dream as an artist while making a living doing it.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My business partners are my brothers. Our artist, David, was feeling miserable at this job as a Walgreens cashier. Fortunately, he, at the time, had been honing his skills as an illustrator. Specifically as an anime art illustrator. He was slowly growing notoriety on art platforms like DeviantArt and Pixiv. I, at the time, was just getting out of college and was suddenly beaten by the entrepreneurship bug. I saw an opportunity with David once I noticed just how good an artist he was. So I managed to convince him to start a business around his art with me.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
We foster brand loyalty by being very active on Instagram and Twitter. We do our best to address all comments, questions, and requests on either platform. We also send out newsletters to our fans, telling stories of our journey running the business.
