We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Justin & Amelia Long a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Justin & Amelia, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
The defining moment in our professional career choices goes back to the moment our son was diagnosed with having Autism. We did not know then what it would mean for us years later but that is the moment that our course was plotted and eventually would come to the day that we set sail in our vision. With his diagnosis then came finding providers that would help give him the tools he needed to be as successful as possible. We found him occupational therapy(OT), speech therapy(SLP), as well as Applied Behavioral Anaylisis therapy(ABA).
The issue then came that with all of these therapies you must take time out of work to make all the appointments and when going to OT or SLP you were missing hours with ABA. From the constant running around came the vision having our own ABA clinic that not only came from a parents perspective of what Autism was and how it changed our lives but how we could help other parents with the same struggles as we were having.
We found Success on the Spectrum (the only in clinic based franchise) and we made our vision happen. We are currently serving our clients from all over the metro from our clinic here in Lee’s Summit, MO. We bring our parent knowledge as well as the professionals we have hired to bring a different prospective to the industry.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As parents of a child with Autism we bring a different view to the table in our clinic, we understand what other parents are going through each day. Not just a textbook knowledge but a hands on, living in the moment knowledge. We also take pride in hiring the very best we can find in the industry who share our vision for our clients each and everyday. We also use the industry’s best technology to bring parents informed data and analysis in the moment. We have also changed how parents are involved with their child and how they can be more involved with the therpay themselves, not just outsiders looking in.
We do everything we can to help our clients become as successful as possible and to help parents with setting real goals that can be achieved and worked towards.
Everything we do is based on the needs of the parents as well as the client not just our own ambitions and goals, that is typical for the industry.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Understanding is the most helpful tool you can have in the field. If you understand why a parent wants something or feels a certain way then you can begin to help them set goals and have realistic expectations for their child.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Business is always a constant pivot. One cannot get into owning a business if they do not expect to have to pivot. Great owners and businesses are run by those who can admit that an idea or plan was a failure and that they need to change in the strategy. Having goals helps you stay on course but the way you get to the goal can change based on staff, clients, or even the economy. If you work hard to achieve the goal but are flexible in how you get there then you can achieve great things in not only business but life.
