We recently connected with Justice Maxwell and have shared our conversation below.
Justice , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I honestly learned how to model by saying yes, to more opportunities that came my way. I even had to learn to say no if I felt uncomfortable and I had to learn to ask questions when I felt unsure. The skills that were most essential to becoming a male model, where to be open, minded, and learn how to communicate with different creatives, and photographers on what they wanted to see and look, they wanted to bring together for the perfect shot. Some of the obstacles that sit in the way of me learning more would have been some of my characteristics of either being shy, or sometimes stubborn. In the end, I had to overcome that to arrive to the place I am now, and I’m still growing.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those that don’t know me, my name is Justice Maxwell, a.k.a. the rabbit. I got into modeling during my freshman year of college. I didn’t imagine myself doing this, especially with how I was raised it definitely took some courage and a friend or two, pushing me out of my comfort zone. After I did, my first runway show, I was hooked. Some years down the line I ended up doing photography and even styling other models as well as myself. some of the problems that I saw for a few of my clients would be styling men who might not exactly know what to wear for a Photo shoot that they want to make a statement for. I am mostly proud of how much I have come out of my shell. I never used to be this bold and confident, and it honestly helps to be stubborn when it comes to a dream you may have.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
One of the main goals driving my journey, would be for artists, especially those from Cleveland to create with no limits or boundaries. We can be our very worst enemy or greatest supporters. The journey definitely starts from within us, and it sets a ripple effect for those that are moved by our creations.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In the beginning stage of my modeling career, I ended up trying out for a few different agencies. Back then I was an androgynous model. A few people liked how I looked but they said it wasn’t for them. I did have to deal with constant rejection, but it did not make me want to quit. I started using my styling skills, as well as unique features to create different portraits for other photographers, that did want to work with me outside of the agency. As time went on, my confidence grew and my look, began to change. I never forgot who I was, I had to embrace it, so every now, and then I will switch up my look for a group of creatives, photographer, or videographer, to give them exactly what they want, and we can accomplish the goal we set. One no is a good, yes for someone else.
