We recently connected with Jussin and have shared our conversation below.
Jussin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My most meaningful project is Peace of Mind, which I released back in March of this year. I made the album during a particularly rough patch of my life, and I wanted something to capture how I was feeling at the time. I’m also heavily inspired by production greats such as Nujabes, fat jon, Kev Brown, and J Dilla, and I wanted to pay tribute to the artists that helped me get into production and mold my sound.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My artist name is Jussin, but my real name is Justin Arroyo. At the time of writing this, I am a 23-year-old beatmaker and DJ from Frederick, MD. I started making beats when I was 16-years-old. I was very inspired by jazzy hip-hop acts such as Nujabes, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, and A Tribe Called Quest, and I wanted to make something in a similar vein. Initially music started out as a hobby, but it quickly became my biggest passion. Since 2017, I’ve released numerous instrumentals, and I’ve become a DJ and I’ve started to collaborate with rappers.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My first time DJ’ing was a disaster! Back in October of 2023, I was given the opportunity to DJ at a pizza place in my city. I had about 20 minutes to get setup, and I was a nervous and anxious mess. It was my first time really hooking up to a setup other than my own, because prior I only had used my setup. I was late to start, and by the time I started playing music, the thumb drive with all the music I planned to spin that night got corrupted. It was a very frustrating night and one that I considered to be a failure, but I’ve become more welcoming of failure throughout my life. It wasn’t until fairly recently that I realized that you’re never really trying at something unless you fail, and that failure gives us many opportunities to succeed. I continue to put myself out there as an artist, and I welcome failure and success.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Interacting with the community is definitely the most rewarding part of making music. I’m a very introverted guy, but I love being able to meet like-minded creatives! It’s fun to be able to share music with one another and bond over it. Even if I remained an underground artist until the end of my career, I would be content as long as I was still able to interact with other creatives.
