We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jus Lan3 a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jus, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
When I was growing up, my mother and father were teachers. They were always kind and stern when it came to raising me and my older siblings, but one thing they always taught us was reaching for the stars. The only ceiling is the one you build for yourself. And as cliche as it sounds they learned this lesson through their careers. As teachers they learned patience, also the power of trial and error. As long as you get up and keep trying there is no limit to how far you can go. That notion alone is enough to help me strive as an artist. Being a creative is a lot trial and error, and if you dont have the patience then you could potentially hinder yourself. My parents showing me these things since I was young gave me the creative space to even pursue this type of career. For that i’m always blessed to have them as parents.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve never been good at these types of things. I usually like to be behind the scenes. The person holding the camera while the star shines. So when I started making music I used it as a form of communication. To let my inner voice do the talking and be in front for once, because at the end of the day everybody wants to be heard. There is no way I could capture everyones experiences and be the voice for them like I would want to, but with using my own experiences then I hope I could build a space for people to not be alone. That is what music is for me. That’s why I go with the phrase “its more than just music” because it truly is a connection to your inner thoughts and feelings. Music can bring happy or sad memories and can be a part of your own identity. I just hope to bring that to people across the nation, or even better the world.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Being a perfectionist. Believe it or not but the beauty of art is the imperfections as well as the perfections. It’s what makes it the most human in the first place. For example Lil Wayne sparking up and maybe coughing before a verse. Even though it’s not a perfect take we still say it’s iconic.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Seeing your ideas come to life. When its finally in your hand and it’s just as good as you thought it would be. Then you can go around and share it with others. It’s a beautiful thing and i’m glad I have the opportunity to do it with my music.
