We recently connected with JuQoyia Williamson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi JuQoyia, thanks for joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
Overall, business ownership is not for the weak. Out of a 12+ year span, I’ve only not had a job for about 2 of those years combined. I’ve always had a decent career and made good money working, so I always believed to have a backup plan just in case one of my businesses didn’t work. I tried the entire work for myself full-time and it almost drove me crazy! I learned then, as a business owner or life in general, boundaries need to be in place at all times. People will try to discuss business anytime anywhere. With boundaries in place, you are able to weed out potential problematic clients, and it has worked for me thus far.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
Hello, I’m JuQoyia Williamson, known to the events world as Khloe, and I’ve been doing events for 12 years now. It all started when an old friend of mine was expecting, and since I was in college at the time, I missed the initial baby shower and decided to throw my own. From being on decor committees at school and work since the age of 5, it was destined. I’m now at a different level in my career, and I do Events on a corporate level with Fortune 500 companies.
What sets me apart from others in my same field is that I’m not scared of failure. I’ve been doing Events for so long, trial and error really helped me mold my business correctly. I’m self taught with everything I’ve learned, and don’t mind sharing the knowledge. I also know how to do everything, except design a cake. I always leave that to My Favorite Bakery City Girl Treats, owned and operated by Mrs. Rita.(She’s truly one of my Favorites)
I currently live in Texas, and I’m excited for my company to expand and grow. I have my first event here January 2023, and I’m excited for the new vision and expansion.
I’m mostly proud of my ability to navigate obstacles so elegantly. Over the years, I’ve gained a great deal of patience, so it allows me to think quick on my feet and be realistic.

Conversations about M&A are often focused on multibillion dollar transactions – but M&A can be an important part of a small or medium business owner’s journey. We’d love to hear about your experience with selling businesses.
So about 3 months ago, I sold a business I had been sitting on for years. Didn’t do much for it, and a potential buyer was asking me advice for her business in a coaching session, and I told her I had that very exact business, no name attachment to me,(very big in business to get further into the field) and it was ready to go with logo, article formation, etc. She didn’t leave until the sale was final, and I was relieved to have helped her start her entrepreneurial journey. A lot of entrepreneurs want customers to know that their business is their business by namesake, and I believe it hinders business growth and development. People are more reluctant to buy from a business that sounds legit, vs. a business that has 4 names and the owners name inserted. I have 3 Event companies, 2 of my own and one as a partnership. My current names are: Coya & Co. Creatives, Events Elite, and Khloe and Kompany. Two have names that pertain to me, but to the public, they actually believe they are two different people. And it has worked wonders depending on the client scale I’ve created.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
My Best source of new clientele is pretty simple. Word of mouth/ Visual Presentation. If a person loved their event, 9 times out of 10, they will recommend you to their family and friends and so forth. I give client’s visually appealing events, and most times I’ll have at least 4 bookings from one of the events I’ve setup. I’ve built my customer base from scratch, so all my events come from my loyal clients. For the past 2 years, I’ve been not for hire, so if you weren’t a previous client, you couldn’t get an event. Making it easier to navigate and weed out potentially bad clientele.
