We were lucky to catch up with Jupiterkami recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jupiterkami, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
If I went back in time I would definitely start as soon as possible. I first started making music in 2019 but didn’t really start making any steps until early 2022. Before making music, around 2016, I was an animator under the name “ReVan SFM” on YouTube, where I posted terrible FNaF (Five Nights at Freddy’s) and Bendy and the Ink Machine animations using Source filmmaker. If I didn’t do that and started making music at that time, right now I would be a much better musician with a lot more experience and contacts. In retrospect, I’m really disappointed in myself for not starting sooner and the amount of precious time I had wasted in my younger years.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have always been interested in anything that seemed creative, fun and cool to me. Music was never really a part of my family nor did I have an interest in it when I was a kid, but around April of 2019 I stumbled upon a random FL Studio vocal mixing tutorial. I then scouted over the internet and found a Juice WRLD type beat which I used to make my first ever track “Tired”.
For some odd reason, I thought the song was good enough for me to make a new YouTube, Instagram, and twitter account under the name “Iced Ace”, which I posted the song on. I just kept on going, eventually changing my name to LoneSoul777, and ultimately in late 2019, changed my name one last time to Jupiterkami. I’m always trying to find creative ways to stand out and build a brand from not only my name, but also just overall visually. For example, my mask has a red + and a blue + symbol painted on it, and I go under the nickname “The Villain”.
I also have my own “VR Chat” like character so those who make fan art of me are able to draw that character, and people are able to recognize who it is (If they know me, of course)
I’m really proud of how far I’ve come and how I’ve been able to build a brand over a simple name and simple ++ symbols. I want people to know that I’m just here to make music that I love and that I appreciate the support I’ve ever gotten.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My parents are immigrants from Mexico. Given that they came here with no money, once they met and got together they decided to settle in South Dallas, the hood, as we call it here. Growing up they did a fantastic job in raising me and have always been there to support me. I never strayed away from a good path but I’ve always been living in poverty. They never managed to finish school because they had to help their parents to make money and work. 40+ years later and here we are and nothing will make my life much better than to tell them that they don’t have to work anymore and for me to have the ability to write them a check of 100K$.
I’m not simply trying to “make it out the hood” I want to take my parents out the hood. I want them to live the life that they deserve and the life they never got.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Networking is very important! You will not succeed if you just release music on SoundCloud and hope that out of nowhere, you’re an overnight sensation. Best practices is to go on YouTube, Instagram, twitter, and even real life events to meet people that are willing to check you out, and also meet like-minded individuals who can elevate you more. You also need to make yourself more discoverable, if you have a basic name or if you’re only on 2 platforms, people won’t be able to find you easily. Not everyone uses SoundCloud, so drop on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, anywhere. If you go up to someone and ask them to look you up, they need to be able to open their preferred medium of music listening and be able to find you and your work. Promotion is key! When you drop a song don’t just sit back. Message, email, DM, whatever you do, try to get the song’s numbers up. Don’t be like “Aye check me out bro I’m next up” say “Hey, I recently released this song and I wanted to ask if you are willing to give some of your time to listen, thank you” Build a respectable audience that is willing to stay and eventually they will promote you on places such as Twitter and instagram stories. This takes time, some get it faster than others. Never give up, don’t be discouraged.
