We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Junyi Zhang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Junyi below.
Junyi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
As an artist myself, I have experienced firsthand the joy and fulfillment that art brings to my life. I feel a deep sense of responsibility to share this gift and empower others, especially young children, to explore their creativity and artistic potential. Volunteering to teach art allows me to give back to the community, inspire young minds, and ignite a lifelong passion for artistic expression.
Art offers a gateway to exploring different cultures, traditions, and perspectives. I introduce children to diverse art forms, artists, and global artistic traditions. Through engaging discussions and hands-on activities, I encourage children to appreciate and respect cultural diversity, broadening their horizons and fostering a sense of inclusivity and empathy.
My decision to volunteer and teach art to young children during my spare time stems from a genuine passion for art and a deep desire to make a positive impact in their lives. Through art education, I aim to inspire creativity, foster self-expression, and cultivate essential skills that will benefit these young minds beyond the realm of art. I find immense fulfillment in witnessing their artistic growth, confidence, and the joy that art brings to their lives. Together, we are creating a brighter future where creativity thrives, and young artists flourish.
In the words of Picasso, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” By instilling a love for art in young minds, I hope to plant the seeds of lifelong creativity, curiosity, and self-expression, enabling them to embrace their inner artist and navigate the world.
Hopefully one day in the future I will not only as a volunteer but also have my own little studio to teach young kids art and create a supportive and non-judgmental space where children feel encouraged to explore their artistic abilities.
Junyi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Junyi Zhang, and I am a graduate of the China Academy of Art with a Bachelor’s degree in Animation. I further pursued my education at the Savannah College of Art and Design, specializing in Animation. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of being involved in some incredible animation and gaming projects.
One notable project I had the opportunity to work on was the renowned animated series, “Futurama,” where I served as the main background designer. The latest season of “Futurama” is set to premiere on Hulu on July 24th, 2023, and I am thrilled to share it with all of you. Additionally, I am excited about the upcoming season of “Disenchantment,” which will be available on Netflix soon. Furthermore, “Fired on Mars,” a project I contributed to as one of the earliest background artists, was released on HBO Max on April 20th and received so many positive reviews.
In addition to my work in animation, I have also ventured into the world of illustration. My original picture book, “Serendipity,” was shortlisted for the 2023 Apila First Illustration Picture Book Award in Spain. Another one of my picture books, titled “When Mommy is Busy,” won the first prize at the Bookfest Awards.
Throughout my artistic journey, I have gained valuable experience and honed my skills as a background designer/ visual development concept artist and illustrator. I am constantly seeking new opportunities to express my creativity and contribute to the ever-evolving world of art and design.
Thank you for taking the time to learn a little bit about me. I am passionate about my craft and eager to continue creating meaningful and inspiring works in the field of animation and illustration.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, I feel art has the power to touch people’s lives, inspire them, and evoke emotions. Artists have the privilege of impacting others through their work. Whether it’s through a painting, a performance, or a story, art has the ability to transcend boundaries and connect with people on a deep and profound level. Knowing that my creations can evoke joy, provoke thought, or bring comfort to others is incredibly rewarding. Also being an artist or creative is a journey of continuous growth and learning. Every project presents new challenges and opportunities for exploration. I’m constantly pushing my boundaries, experimenting with different techniques, and seeking ways to improve my skills. The satisfaction of personal growth and the pursuit of artistic excellence are deeply fulfilling aspects of this creative path.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I feel society should recognize and appreciate the value of art and creativity. This can be done through public exhibitions, cultural events, and awards that celebrate the achievements of artists and creatives. By acknowledging their contributions, society affirms the importance of their work. Additionally, society should ensure that artists and creatives have access to resources such as affordable studio spaces, art supplies, and funding opportunities. Also society should celebrate diversity and ensure equal opportunities for artists and creatives from all backgrounds. This includes promoting inclusivity in art education, exhibitions, and representation. By embracing diverse perspectives and experiences, society enriches the creative ecosystem and encourages artistic innovation.
