Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jay Ess. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jay Ess, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I initially learned how to DJ through a childhood friend when I got out of the military. My Friend Fleming has a Production Company (NPP) and throughout the week he would mix in his shed and I picked up the controllers by watching him. Initially mixing open format, a couple years later turning it into my own thing. As far as producing My business partner and friend Jc Morales asked if I wanted to learn how to produce, he would teach me the basics and so he did and that’s how I ended up signing my first track with a song we did together. As time went on, I wanted to take it more serious and actually sign to more labels, so I took some production classes with another good friend of mine Charles D who really taught me to start thinking outside the box and taught me how to tighten my mixes down and how to create new sounds from scratch. I think I could have taken producing much more serious sooner as I was asked multiple times to learn. Laying out a track so that it can have a story within the groove and definitely mixing down a track is most essential, it can literally make or break the track you are making. At the time the only obstacle I had was my self being afraid to fail and being turned down or simply not being good enough. I still constantly think about that till this day but keep pushing myself to get better and learn more ever day! It is definitely an ongoing battle!
Jay Ess, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Junior I Go by Jay Ess, I am a Tech House & Minimal/Deep-Tech Producing, & Co-Owner of Minimal Nest Records with Jc Morales. Jc came to me with an idea to start a label he had already been doing monthly mixes under Minimal Nest, so we got the idea down and launched it as a record label. We look for raw authentic Minimal/Deep-Tech sound. What sets us apart is that we try to find the freshest of sounds regardless of the popularity of the artist. We strive on giving new and upcoming artist a shot to let their music be heard. We have signed a few known artists as well as they also gave us a shot to sign some of their tracks. I’m proud of how much we have grown over the last 2 years of starting the label. We told ourselves that we would keep it strictly organic and let the music speak for itself. since doing that we have had multiple Top 10 tracks as well as Number one tracks under the label. as far as myself I love to learn and continue to grow as a producer and Dj constantly trying new sounds even if it isn’t known in the genre. Mixing techno sounds into Tech-house and Minimal music. what makes me proud on the personal level is how much music I have finished and signed for the upcoming months of 2023!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal is pretty much the same as everyone Elses. I really want to have my music heard, while still learning and trying to create a new sound by mashing some tropical sounds with deep minimal basslines. I would love to see the Minimal Nest Records label grow as well. I would be content with the label growing and having these new artists coming up music being played around the world with support from big artists!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A couple years ago I had a tragic accident in my family that really changed my whole outlook on life. It was no longer just partying and Djing day in and day out! I wanted to leave my mark because life can really come at you fast in mysterious ways. That is when I realized I wanted to be creator and open doors around the world not just in my local town. My oldest brother once told me if you going to try something new give it your all if not then you are simply wasting your time. Those are the words I have to constantly keep reminding myself of when I don’t feel the motivation or lose hope.
