We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful June Myers. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with June below.
June, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
When I was a young mother, I breast-fed all three of my children. I just loved the bond that was created and the moments of relaxing cuddling my babies. Early in my 40s, I was in need of a new job. A friend told me about a position at WIC encouraging breastfeeding. This sounded very appealing so I applied.
Fortunately, I did get the job and begin my role as a PEER helper at WIC. This really helped me to find joy in supporting other families in their new roles as mothers and fathers. My field is truly one that the more you learn the more you need to learn. So in 2007 I became a certified lactation counselor. The class was so wonderful! I was able to put so many pieces together about how lactation works.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After continuing my role at WIC for many years, I began working at a local community hospital as a lactation counselor. The work at the hospital was definitely demanding. Here I was for the first time working at a hospital, working with brand new babies and new families. I needed a lot of self positive talk during that time.
The bonds that were formed with the families were so fulfilling.
Again, so many new things to learn!
In 2010, I sat the IBCLC, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant test and was awarded the certificate. This was a huge accomplishment as it is the gold standard of lactation consulting. I continue to maintain that certification.
In 2017, I decided to start my own business in lactation. My goal was to do prenatal consults and home lactation consultations with families. Home consultations are a great way to learn in a comfortable environment and where you spend most of your time.
It was a slow start at first. Yet I continued on and have found success with this business.
I feel like what sets Mom to Mom Lactation Services apart is the follow up that I am able to provide. As incredibly wonderful as Breastfeeding is, it can come with some challenges. On-going support is so important for the families I work with. Currently, I provide support pertaining to milk supply concerns, flange fitting, latching, tongue tie, pumping, various pump types, returning to work, breast and or nipple pain, oral exercises for babies, tummy time and much more.
In the past several years, I have continued my education, completing the Tummy Time Method TM class, flange fitting class, and the Advanced practice training. These trainings have. assisted me to support families in meaningful ways. There will be more trainings to come in the future!
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I feel like the most important part of this business is having a heart for it. One has to really care about the folks with whom they work. It’s a constant adjustment for different personalities. That keeps the work interesting though and keeps me on my toes. I also appreciate working with younger people as I feel this helps keep me young.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Again, the most important piece of this business is each family! What I think helped me to build a reputation is the care that I offer with each consultation and the follow up I provide. My value is in my work ethic. I would like to think that each family feels a concern I have for them.
