We were lucky to catch up with June Mugo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi June, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The ultimate goal is to be a voice for the silenced, educate our audience and deliver an experience through visual storytelling. As human beings we might not all enjoy being in a classroom or reading a book, however, we live for stories. The objective is to bring awareness to important topics through making compelling visuals and a driven storyline as our main instruments. Vibes by June goes beyond the screen, it’s a creative and insightful experience; one that starts conversations.
June, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have experience behind and in front of the camera, and in the editing room. But my heart and passion is in directing; that is where I soar. Since I’ve been shooting and editing since I was in elementary school, I’ve since developed the technical skills I needed to understand in order to put visuals together. Being able to take someone’s vision, and bring it to life takes a lot of trust; I am most proud of how trusting my approach and work ethic is. You don’t have to know me or my strengths to know my team and I will deliver, the work certainly speaks for itself.
Although I’m an artist, I’ve always wanted to be a teacher but not in a classroom and I knew a camera would always be a part of my life so it was figuring out how to combine the two. In college, I not only studied Psychology and Sociology but I knew this field is what I wanted my art to focus on. Ironically, more people are likely to latch onto stories before a book.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
A couple things that are rewarding about being a creative would be inspiring others, people learning and being moved by your art. All of these components make the long nights, disappointments, and moments of excitement worth it. But there’s one component that is most rewarding to me and that is witnessing my growth; seeing how far I’ve come and knowing it’s only going to get better is exhilarating.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
This journey is mine, and I’m the only person who knows how to get where I want to be. To help visualize what I’m saying, picture life’s journey as a trip to the destination of your choice. The passengers in your car resemble your supporters (family, friends, mentors, investors etc.). As the driver, of course you can allow people to guide you through better paths, but regardless of that, you are the only person who can truly take you to your destination. Long analogy short, I’ve given many people the opportunity to drive my car because I was not always confident in myself to get me to my destination. I needed to learn that the confidence I need comes within (me).
