Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to June Hucko. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
June, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I’ve been really blessed to work on so many meaningful projects over the years. I think what makes projects so meaningful to me is the time spent with other creatives and the process we each go through to add more and more to a concept. One project that stands out in particular was my music video “Playing with Fire” for Breakup Shoes. A lot of people came together to help see the vision that Josh Belveal and I created. We had a crew of about 15 people that were all ready to help out and that believed in me as the director. People let us use their houses, cars, dogs, and most importantly, time. There is a lot of love in video and it shines through in the final product. This was one of my first music videos and it sits in a very special place in my heart. Now that I’ve been working in the film industry for a few years and had the chance to be apart of different projects, I always strive to work on projects that care about the people that are working on them. It wasn’t always that way, sometimes I wanted to work on things that were “big” or paid more, but now I understand that what really makes a project meaningful is the family.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a director, photographer and illustrator. I first got started in art when I would make comics and have photoshoots with my friends in high school. From there I went on to study film and felt a strong attraction to music videos. I began making short films, music videos and photo series with the help of my best friends. From there I moved to New York and started working in the film industry in the art department. It was here I learned that “professional shoots” were really no different than what I was doing with my friends. It was beautiful to see. I now am in Arizona working on a four part limited series and a photo book about fluid sexuality. As a creative, I work on projects that focus on trauma, nature, music, coming of age and connection. I am a loving and curious person and thats what I bring to the table. I love exploring these topics with other people and creating something that helps us connect a little deeper. Whether it be through video, photo, or drawings, I make visual poetry. Right now I am very excited to announce that I am starting my own production company called Tuberware. It will house creatives and help support their projects. We are extremely focused on creating and well being.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Right now, my main mission is being open to the process. Process is the product and being open to that makes all the difference. For a while, I was so concerned about looks, perfection, and success. Once I shifted my focus and realized it wasn’t about that, it changed everything. It really is just about creating. And there is enough of that for everyone.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I would say I have a few close partners that I work with a lot, but one in particular would be Latavia Young (@thelataivayoung on instagram). She is a force of nature! We met in college when we both started working at the Video Services department. Every once and a while we would get scheduled together and start chatting about things. She was always extremely focused and passionate about what she envisioned for her life and for the future of the film industry, which always left me feeling inspired. We ended up living together for our last semester of college and then she started working on some of my projects. She always would help me out a lot, even if she didn’t have a big title on the project. That made all the difference. I was like this is someone I want supporting me. Since then, we’ve been creative partners on four music videos and great friends. Plus, she randomly will let me do photoshoots with her and they are always the best time ever. She is also my creative partner as I am starting Tuberware. She’s part of the fam.
