We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jun Kuang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jun below.
Hi Jun, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Everything can go back to 2007 when I first watched John Ford’s The Grapes of Wrath. It is one of these magical moments in our lives, you know, it hit me, it hit me hard, and it made me realize that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I want to make movies.
Jun, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As I said earlier, I’m a filmmaker. I write a lot and I film a lot. I currently own a Los Angeles-based video production company JM 16, and I’m prepping a feature film.
I graduated from the New York Film Academy Los Angeles in MFA Filmmaking. Soon after graduation, I started working as a project producer with a China-based production company. This experience allowed me to gain a deep understanding of the complexities of the film production industry on an international scale. It taught me the importance of effective collaboration, communication, and adaptability when working with diverse teams and cultural backgrounds.
One of the defining qualities that I bring to any project is my unwavering commitment to excellence. I don’t consider a project finished until it meets the highest standards of quality and is truly well-done.
In addition to my experience in China and my commitment to excellence, I am also the owner of JM 16, a commercial filmmaking firm based in Los Angeles. At JM 16, we have a unique approach to our work. We understand that every brand has a distinctive story to tell, and we prioritize every little detail in bringing those stories to life. Whether it’s a commercial, a promotional video, or any other project, we take the time to truly understand the brand’s essence and vision. This approach allows us to create content that not only resonates with the target audience but also stays true to the brand’s identity.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I truly believe that one of the most fundamental ways society can help artists is by allowing them to be themselves, to remain true to their creative essence, and by appreciating the vulnerability they bring to their work. The core of all creative expression is the willingness to be vulnerable and to share that vulnerability with the public. This authenticity is what gives art its unique power to connect with and move people.
First and foremost, society should create an environment that embraces and celebrates this vulnerability. Artists often pour their hearts and souls into their work, which can be an emotionally taxing process. Society can provide emotional support by acknowledging the courage it takes for artists to share their innermost thoughts, emotions, and experiences through their art. This recognition can come through appreciation, empathy, and understanding.
In addition, society can create practical opportunities for artists to thrive. This includes investing in arts education, funding for creative projects, and accessible spaces for artistic expression. These resources not only empower artists to refine their craft but also allow them to reach wider audiences and have a lasting impact on society.
Furthermore, it’s crucial for society to recognize that diversity and inclusivity are vital in the world of art. Artists come from various backgrounds, and their unique perspectives enrich our cultural landscape. By fostering an inclusive and accepting environment, society ensures that all voices are heard and celebrated.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative almost feels like raising a child. It’s like nurturing an idea or a project, letting it grow, guiding it through its stages of development, and ultimately witnessing it flourish and have the opportunity to thrive.
Much like a parent who watches their child take their first steps or achieve a significant milestone, as an artist, seeing your creation come to life is an indescribable feeling. It’s a blend of pride, wonder, and a deep connection to the work you’ve poured your heart and soul into.
There’s a profound sense of satisfaction that comes from nurturing an idea from its infancy to maturity, overcoming obstacles along the way, and making it a reality. The creative process often involves challenges, revisions, and moments of doubt, but these only make the eventual success all the more gratifying.
Moreover, when you release your creation into the world, whether it’s a piece of art, a story, a film, or any other form of creative expression, you give it the chance to touch others’ lives, evoke emotions, and spark conversations. The impact your work can have on people, the way it resonates with them, and the discussions it generates can be deeply rewarding.
In essence, the most rewarding part of being an artist or creative is the opportunity to nurture and witness the growth of your creative ‘child.’ It’s about allowing your ideas to evolve, taking pride in their development, and sharing them with the world, knowing that they have the potential to make a positive difference, provoke thought, and inspire others. This sense of fulfillment and the knowledge that your creativity has the power to thrive and influence others is what makes the creative journey incredibly enriching.
