We recently connected with Jummy Lasisi and have shared our conversation below.
Jummy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
I mange my social media and have grown to really enjoy it! Jummy’s Treats is only 2 years old and was established during a time that times had shifted to favour an online presence rather than a traditional physical location. In this time home businesses thrived especially through social media content specifically short form content. I was definitely inspiring to see other small business owners finding recognition and like minded individuals through these online communities. I wanted to use my online platform as a visual diary to document my progress. I can also showcase my products not only to potential customers but for the sake of sharing my passion with others that may have the same passion or just enjoy it! I really love to play with graphics which inspired the uniqueness of my instagram page that also serves as graphic design practice for me. So far its been fun but challenging as well. I have a small obsession with thinking I can teach myself anything, so the challenge comes from this trait but has produced a website and a growing, promising success in my social media platforms as well. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to find excitement in producing things you love and not to allow numbers or others to diminish that joy.
Jummy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Welcome to Jummy’s Treats, where my passion for baking and my Nigerian heritage come together to create a magical pink fantacy. My name is Jummy, and I’ve always had a deep love for baking, inspired and encouraged by the incredible women in my family, including my mother and older sister.
Baking has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I would often surprise my loved ones with homemade brownies or cupcakes, always eager to try out new recipes and bring joy through my creations. Little did I know that these simple gestures would pave the way for a thriving business.
When the pandemic hit, my friends and family saw the potential in my talent and urged me to share my creations with a wider audience. Originally, I planned to focus on snacks and baked goods, but fate had other plans for me. A close friend asked me to make a cake for their birthday, and that moment ignited a newfound passion for cake making, becoming the heart and soul of Jummy’s Treats.
Since then, my business has mesmerized the local community, building a great reputation both locally and through the power of social media. I pour my heart and soul into each creation, crafting cakes that are not only visually stunning but bursting with incredible flavours. From elaborate designs to whimsical cupcakes, every treat I make is a reflection of my creativity and attention to detail.
I am grateful for the overwhelming support from the community, as they continue to spread the word about Jummy’s Treats. It brings me immense joy to see the smiles on people’s faces when they indulge in my creations. The combination of flavours, textures, and artistry in each cake and baked good is my way of sharing a piece of my passion with the world.
Whether you’re marking a special occasion or simply craving a delicious treat, I invite you to experience the magic of Jummy’s Treats. Step into my world of exquisite flavors, personalized service, and an unwavering commitment to quality. I am excited to embark on this journey with you and create memorable moments through the art of baking.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Jummy’s Treats was born during the pandemic so I one of the words that represent my business is resilience. Though it was confusing time for us all it was also an opportunity to get creative. I had to find ways to get my business out there and completely accessible from the comfort of the customer’s home. I was also completing my degree in Cellular & Molecular Biology. Running a business as one person can be extremely taxing but completely rewarding but as the owner as well you grow very attached to your business because it represents you. Through the lessons and losses, it has also shaped me to be a resilient person. To prove to myself that I’m capable and even though I’m nowhere near perfect now, I’m always closer to where I want to be.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Though still a work in progress, social media has been the fastest way I’ve grown my business in the short span of 2 years. The trendiest move you make is to do short form content as it can easily reach the masses and convey your mission in less than a minute. In a society that thrives on social media and relies on it to gain information that we would definitely not have discovered in internet search bar, individuals are enjoying the constant stimulation. On a more creative spectrum, it an excellent way to express yourself quickly and authentically. It’s safe to say that social media is the future. My advice would be just to go for it! It doesn’t have to perfect or professional, it just has to be there ready for viewing. Try to remember we live in a wold where no one knows what their doing all the time. Its okay to be inexperienced or a little lost because you might bump into something you will really enjoy. I didn’t expect to fall in love with graphic design but as my interest grew I found a way to incorporate it into my social media pages and act as my very own virtual portfolio!
