We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jummy Kirby, M.A, LPC, PMH-C. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jummy below.
Jummy, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
As the founder of Relinquish and Transcend Counseling, my journey began with a profoundly personal experience during the birth of my second child. This moment became a catalyst for my unwavering commitment to holistic mental health care. In my search for culturally competent support, I was struck by its scarcity, igniting a passionate determination to create a sanctuary for individuals who, like me, faced challenges in finding the right resources.
Our mission is deeply rooted in cultural sensitivity, inclusivity, and community. We aim to address the profound need for mental health support within marginalized communities. The trauma I experienced during that pivotal moment crystallized into a vision – a vision that ultimately led to the establishment of Relinquish and Transcend Counseling.
Going beyond traditional approaches, we offer virtual services, nature-based therapy, and empowering group discussions. Our commitment extends further as we actively challenge oppressive systems, striving to create a transformative space for all. This mission holds deep meaning for me because it’s not just about offering services; it’s about dismantling barriers, advocating for mental health equity, and making a lasting impact on individuals who share similar journeys.
Jummy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am thrilled to open up about my multifaceted journey with you. Married and blessed with three children, my life’s path beautifully weaves together honoring traditions, building a family legacy, and embracing my Nigerian roots. This delicate balance has become a wellspring of strength and inspiration, evident in the story we’re creating as a family.
As the eldest of four children in a first-generation Nigerian-American family, I find myself at the forefront of a journey shaped by our cultural heritage. Together, we strive to break the patterns of intergenerational struggles and overcome trauma. While I may not be the first to navigate this path within my family, I am leading the way and setting an example as we journey towards healing and empowerment.
My lifelong curiosity has centered around human behavior. However, it was my personal teenage experience grappling with anxiety, without therapeutic guidance, that initially sparked my interest in this field. Through workshops, individual counseling, and more, my team and I are dedicated to guiding individuals towards resilience, self-discovery, and positive mental well-being.
At Relinquish and Transcend Counseling, our approach to mental health is holistic. We go beyond conventional methods, offering a diverse array of services including virtual therapy, nature-based sessions, workshops, trainings, insightful events, and empowering group discussions. We are committed to supporting every aspect of people’s well-being. This holistic perspective recognizes the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit, nurturing overall well-being.
What sets me apart is the authenticity deeply rooted in my personal journey, transcending cultural barriers. I take great pride in turning my own adversities into a platform for advocacy and support. Notably, I’m immensely proud of the vision that has propelled the growth of my private practice, surpassing expectations within its first four years.
I extend a heartfelt invitation to potential clients, followers, and supporters to join me on this empowering journey. Together, let us break barriers, embrace growth, and foster a community that prioritizes mental well-being. Join me as we navigate the intersection of tradition and transformation, forging a legacy of resilience and self-discovery.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Certainly! The journey of building my audience on social media has been an enriching experience. It all began when a friend and my husband encouraged me to share my personality through videos. Recognizing the power of connecting authentically, I started creating content that not only reflected my expertise but also showcased the genuine person behind the professional facade.
The key advice I’d offer to those starting to build their social media presence is to be authentic and showcase your unique personality. People connect with realness, so don’t hesitate to let your genuine self shine through. Consistency is crucial – regularly share content that aligns with your brand and resonates with your audience. Engage with your followers, respond to comments, and foster a sense of community. Remember, building a social media presence is a journey, so be patient, stay true to yourself, and enjoy the process of connecting with your audience.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
As I bridge BIPOC experiences with therapy, management, and entrepreneurship, diverse resources have deeply influenced my perspective. Reshma Saujani’s book “Brave, Not Perfect” offers profound insights, urging a shift in mindset that resonates with the resilience and authenticity often emphasized in therapy.
Dr. Joy Harden Bradford’s TEDx Talk on “Black Girls’ Guide to Surviving Corporate” has been impactful, shedding light on the unique challenges faced by Black women in professional settings. Essays such as “Cultural Humility Versus Cultural Competence” by Melanie Tervalon and Jann Murray-García have deepened my understanding of providing culturally competent therapy.
Therapy-focused resources, like the works of Dr. Thema Bryant-Davis, including her book “Thriving in the Wake of Trauma,” have significantly influenced my approach. They emphasize the importance of culturally responsive mental health practices. Platforms such as Therapy for Black Girls and Inclusive Therapists offer valuable insights into making mental health resources more accessible and relevant to diverse communities.
These resources contribute to a more holistic and culturally competent approach in therapy, management, and entrepreneurship. They foster an inclusive mindset that aligns with the diverse experiences and needs of individuals of color.
