We were lucky to catch up with Jumel Javonillo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jumel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
I have worked being a customer service provider ever since I can remember. My first job as a teen was at a fast food chain, which comes with their own unique and truthfully the most challenging experiences. Working with other people has always been easy for me, so I thought how difficult can this job be? I disregarded the fact that I also have to help other people whether they were having an amazing day or the complete opposite. I used to let others get to me & it would affect me mentally. Was it something I have said? Was I not smiling enough? There was a lot of self blame at first, but some thoughts would get the best of me. How can people be so mean for no apparent reason? I always find myself circling back to this question. . . But then, something happened, a realization. Why was I letting outside forces change the way I see myself or even affect me in any way shape or form? That has changed the game for me almost immediately. The way that I handle hard situations from that day on has given me my power back. I have come to realized that no matter how people treat me is a reflection of them and not myself. Providing an excellent customer service shouldn’t only happens if the person receiving it is being kind. This can also be a reflection of how we are as a provider on handling our own hardships, no matter what. As a professional, I have to take into consideration that other people are going through their own struggle & if that reflects on how they treat other people, then so be it. I have learned to let go of things that I can’t control and that has given me so much peace. This is the most important lesson I have learned at a prior job if not the best because not only that I can apply it towards my business but it has also helped to be the best person that I can be.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I was born in the Philippines and came here when I was 14. Seeing the contrast of how people live here compare to how it is back home makes me appreciate what I have. I am blessed with the opportunities that I have received so far and continue to strive for so much more because I know that I am meant to do so much more. Looking at my mom and all of the other Adult immigrants who chose to leave their home to come to a foreign country & to live a better life is not only a statement that I hear all the time but have experienced it first hand. The hardships that they have to go through starting from scratch, from not knowing anyone in a foreign country let alone raising their offsprings is such a selfless act. This inspires me to be resilient. For myself and for my 2 daughters. I will continue to grow as a person and to stay humble no matter where I’m at in my journey & to help those who are struggling in any way form that I can because I know how it is to have nothing. I hope that I’m able to inspire others as well to keep going, no matter what your current situation is. Never EVER EVER give up.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I believe I would. Looking back, Everything was meant to happened the way it did. I was meant to go through all of the hardships that led me to be where I am right now in my career. From losing a family member and changing my career goal to beauty instead of the medical field, from not knowing I was pregnant for 9 months with my first child until the day of delivery ALL lead me here. NOW.
