We recently connected with July Turner and have shared our conversation below.
July, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects I have been apart of has been released this February. I wrote and recorded my self-titled debut EP (4 songs) for about a year until I recorded the songs June 2022. A lot of the writing was done in the process of moving from Atlanta, GA to Nashville, TN. I moved to Nashville to start my career in the music business and started looking for a producer and someone I could trust help bring my vision to life. I owe a lot of thanks to Tuk Smith (formerly of Biters and now Tuk Smith & The Restless Hearts) for helping me with this record and believing in this music. A funny story about meeting Tuk was I had been researching current rock albums out of Atlanta/Nashville and came across two punk rock records that Tuk had recorded. I knew it would be a stretch since I sing country music but with as much rock n’ roll I put into my records I figured let’s give it a shot. Tuk and his band had a show in Nashville and I waited till their load out to ask if he would produce my record. Definitely had to put my ego aside and just give it a shot. I never looked back and formed a great working relationship with another great songwriter and producer. I wrote mostly all the record myself other than 2 songs that Tuk had a hand in bringing up to speed. We recorded at Sienna Studios in Nashville, TN where acts like Aersomith, Scott Stapp of Creed, Buckcherry, and many others have recorded. It took us 4 days for tracking and 1 day dedicated to harmonies. I’ve never drank that many Red Bulls in one week. You can find this record on all streaming platforms. Songs recorded: Neon Nights, Leavin’ Love Again, To Georgia, Heartbreaker.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Yes, I’m a songwriter, entertainer, and recording artist in Nashville, TN. I operate under my business name Turned Up Entertainment LLC. I’m currently an independent artist and have been touring full-time for the past two years. I got into singing and writing while playing in a band I formed in college named FreshPow. I graduated from Kennesaw State University August 2021 and received my degrees in Accounting. Business Management, and Music Business and Entertainment. I learned a lot about the business side of music through my time attending the Joel A. Katz Music and Entertainment Business Program at Kennesaw and from touring over the past few years. I came to Nashville the summer after I graduated and never looked back. Since moving to town, I’ve been honing my craft of songwriting and figuring out who I am as an artist. I’ve released multiple projects since being in town and have formed so many great relationships in this industry. My current band has been with me full-time the past two years and we are on our “That’s How It Goes” Summer Tour at the moment. This tour is supporting our most recent single “That’s How It Goes”. I would say my sound and image is an influence from all the great 70’s era songwriters mixed with modern country radio producing and urban cowboy imagery. Bands I took a huge influence from is Aerosmith, Jason Aldean, Tom Petty, Butch Walker, Bob Seger, Black Crowes, Kenny Chesney, Bon Jovi, and Thin Lizzy. I write mostly all of my own songs, fund the records, manage marketing the brand, book the tours independently, and eat, sleep, breathe music. I have a huge passion for this industry. I want to write and release music that moves people, tells stories, says things people may not have the strength to say themselves, inspires others, and give people art they can believe in and love. It’s also my passion to be a great entertainer, leave a legacy, build multiple businesses through entrepreneurship, and become the artist God is leading me to be. I have been blessed to do what I love full-time and God willing the wheels will keep rolling. Rock n’ roll forever.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist or creative is seeing a song actually come to life. There is nothing like coming up with an idea in your head, writing it down, and it becoming a real life entity. It’s a magical thing. From all the people that get to be apart of the song behind the scenes, the players on the records, the album arts, music videos, all of it. Then watching people have a connection to it or enjoy it is just over the top. That to me, is the best part of what I get to do.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Just support them through social media mainly which is mostly always free. Follow their Spotify and any accounts they have created. Buy their merchandise directly from them. Attend a live show. Share their music to friends and family. Really is simple as that.
