Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to July Bailey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi July, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I feel like this right now has been the biggest risk I’ve ever taken. When I think about the amount of people I personally know that have failed MISERABLY even though they’re top tier talent, it kinda scares me. I’m talking bout people who I’m nowhere near when it comes to writing, singing or performing. They are just that good. So when I see that, it’s almost like “dang. If they failed, I’m DEFINITELY not gonna make it.” Then I remind myself that they’re not July… and July is THAT girl.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m July Bailey. I’m a Singer/Songwriter from Spanish Town, Jamaica. I recorded my first song at 12 years old in my the basement of my childhood home. My brother learned how to make beats and we got an old computer mic and we did our thing. My other older brother was coaching me throughout the whole thing. He taught me how to write, really. So, I would say my brothers really helped me get my feet wet.
I started taking music seriously in 2019 when I dropped “Bad Yaadie”. The reception to it was great even though it was only my third single at the time. It gave me a lot of confidence. I wanna say, I dropped like 4 songs that year. Then, the following year, I released my most successful song to date, “Nuh Tell Nobody”. I’m the proudest of this one. It’s brought so many eyes to me. It’s been in shows for BET and All Black. I’m really proud of it.
Covid hit literally as soon as I dropped it, and derailed the momentum that I was starting to pick up with this song. I was hearing it on the radio, I had just shot the video and then…silence.
It feels like I’m a new artist all over again. I’m finally hitting my stride again, and I love that for me. When I dropped “Frenz Wid Benefits Last Year”, I made a bold statement and ruffled a lot of feathers, but it forced many naysayers to pay attention to my skill as a writer. Till this day, that’s my favorite song. And now we’re celebrating the release of Oh My God, my most recent single.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
For sure. I want a grammy. I want to hit the charts. I want my nieces to brag about me. And I want to prove 12 year old me right.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The freedom I get from this avenue of release. I love what I do… sometmes. How many people can say that?
