We recently connected with Julius Hubbard and have shared our conversation below.
Julius , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
For me, art projects, need to have a deeper significant meaning for me to really engage and enjoy what I’m creating. The “Portrait Maps” I create are surrealistic/abstract paintings, that tell stories of people/families that I have met in my life. As a whole “Portrait Maps” are my most meaningful creations, because they are a living, breathing heirlooms that can carry stories on for generations.

Julius , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a visual artist from Chattanooga, TN. Since 2010 I’ve operated a website called GustoArt.com. I’ve produced countless works in both traditional and digital mediums. I’ve done graphic design work for individuals and companies both large and small (MLB, NCAA, BCBS, EPB). I find most fulfillment with my traditional art. I specialize in socially abstract, surrealistic, acrylic paintings; you’ll see this most in my “Portrait Map” paintings. I’ve had artwork featured in a few galleries: Hunter Museum and Betsey Smith Hall to name a couple. I’m currently married and have two beautiful daughters. I also work as a firefighter for the City of Chattanooga.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I have learned from many artist and creators over the years, but there are a few books that stand out in my journey. These books took my creations to another level:
The Artist’s Complete Guide to Facial Expression
by Gary Faigin
Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter (Volume 2) (James Gurney Art)
by James Gurney
Figure Drawing: Design and Invention
by Michael Hampton

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Individuals can support artists and creatives by telling the world about them every chance they get. If you love their work and it inspires, spread it.. Word of mouth is still the best means of spreading information, artist need that. When sharing on social media always credit the artist.
