We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Julissa Romero a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Julissa, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success is defined as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose, the achievement of desired visions and planned goals. Some will say that in order to be successful, you can take many roads. I say there’s only one way and that is on the “passion” road. Passion is defined as a strong and barely controllable emotion. When you have a knowing that you feel this way towards something that you enjoy doing, success is almost always guaranteed. You find ways to embrace the art because without it you simply feel unfulfilled. The other roads can be walked without passion but those are paved with resistance. If you take any of those roads, there isn’t much natural curiosity hence a higher demand for effort and resilience.
Success is not always a walk in the park in every avenue of your life. You will find some things come with passion and others don’t. BUT- if passion is not involved then are you actually enjoying what you are doing and how you are living your life? Is it worth getting to the finish line only to realize that perhaps that wasn’t even the goal to begin with?
There’s only one route that I want to take. I want to walk where every step is cushioned by my love for the vision and where every breeze is warm with dreams. I want to embrace the journey and cross all its crossroads and as I do, I am successful because passion is all it takes.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Julissa Romero. I’ve been singing as long as I can remember. At home, at school, at church, at work, for competitions and for bands. I got deeper into the music industry after growing out of performing other artists songs because it felt limited and karaoke-like. I wanted to create my own music and I had a real understanding for expression through writing in both English and Spanish. I began doing just that and learning the ins and outs of the music business as best I could in order to move my product and protect myself from ill contracts. This lead me to create my own label and publishing to represent myself and possibly future artists.
I put out music in English under the stage name Jula Rome and music in Spanish under the stage name JULAA. Both entities vary in genre and are represented by my company, BOCA MIA MUSIC, LLC.
I am a vocalist/ voice actor and songwriter and I also provide services such as writing lyrics and/or creating songs for artists, jingles for companies, lyrical translations and voiceovers for commercials and audiobooks.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
After many years of trying to make a living off of music alone, I created my own avenue and that demonstrates my resilience. I refused to be signed by labels with bad intentions and I also refused to sit around and wait for a major label to pick me up. I couldn’t let those circumstances cloud my creativity or halt my development. I knew the only way to my vision was to keep towards it and in order to do so, I signed myself. Determined to get there- trailblazing, with or without approval.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Showing up. Being dependable. Delivering. In my opinion, that is key to opportunity and slowly but surely, opportunities get bigger and better.
