We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Juliet Callahan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Juliet thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Learning music came naturally to me. From a young age I would hear all these little melodies in my head that I’d sing and I used to play classical piano at my elementary school’s chapels. I even remember my teachers getting mad at me for humming in class lol. However, when I decided I wanted music to be more than a hobby I invested a lot of time over the past few years to get to the level I am at now as a musician. My passion for music has only grown bigger as I continue to practice and become more knowledgeable of my industry. Having my own studio setup has immensely helped me on my journey as a singer/songwriter because it’s given me the opportunity to compose entire songs at home the moment I feel inspired (i.e. have the freedom to express myself at any time), make beats/record whenever I’d like, taught me the vocabulary/knowledge to properly communicate with collaborators, etc. I believe the level of passion you have is what guides you to the level you will achieve. I am obsessed with music and I don’t see creating music as “practice” I see it as a privilege. When something is your everything, one will go to great lengths to keep it in the center of their life.
Juliet, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a NYC based independent singer/songwriter, producer/engineer and DJ. So to put in simple terms I write, produce, and record my own songs and for other artists as well. I also have started to DJ at private events and am open for hire in my area. During recording sessions not only am I recording, comping, and vocal tuning for clients I also help singers to reach their best vocal potential by vocal coaching – vowel pronunciation, breathing techniques, etc. (when they want my opinion). I truly care about every song I work on and it is important to me for every client I work with to walk out happy with the song we worked on. I also help artists with songwriting, production, topline melodies, branding, social media scheduling, and graphic design. I have built my instagram following (116k) and Spotify from the ground up over the past 2 years and have learned a lot through my own artist development through trial and error. I have a lot of knowledge to share because of my own passion and experiences as a musician. I have accumulated over a quarter million streams since I started releasing music in 2022 and have learned a lot about branding for developing artists. I am very proud of myself for the time and work I put in everyday to improve my music and market myself while releasing songs consistently. It has been very rewarding seeing my progression as an artist and because of all the time I have put in, I really notice the improvement now. I have a burning passion for music and I love the rewarding feeling of helping other artists execute their creative visions/dreams. For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Seeing my hard work and time investment pay off through noticeable improvement in my vocals, writing, and song structure. Also the emotional reactions my songs have evoked in my listeners, friends, and family. One of the most rewarding feelings is being able to inspire your listeners through your own creative expression. Knowing that my songs are understood and help people makes me so happy/whole.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I am currently halfway done reading The 48 Laws of Power and I have already learned a great deal about the acquisition of power in relation to significant moments in history told in each chapter of the book. Each chapter covers a new law of power by telling stories of historical figures and the lessons to be learned by their stories. I think that this book has definitely impacted the way I protect my energy, work, and value as a person and artist. It also sheds light onto the perspective of the moguls ruling any powerful industry. I believe it is a fascinating subject and I definitely recommend giving it a read.
