We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Juliet Callahan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Juliet , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
At age 19 I decided that pursuing a career as a musician was no longer just a dream. It was something I was determined to follow through with. So I promptly transferred from my Business school to an Audio Engineering and Production school in LA. I started out as just a singer/songwriter but it was important to me to be multi-faceted in the industry so I immersed myself in my production while simultaneously continuing to practice my songwriting/singing. I dedicated my time to my craft, focusing on the production/engineering with the goal of being able to produce high quality songs at my home studio. I surrounded myself with seasoned professionals and collabed with experienced musicans. After a year and a half I saw a significant improvement with my music. I knew it was time to start putting my work out there and build a fan base. I released my first single at age 21. I am now at age 22 and have began to release music I write, produce, record, and mix all at my home studio. I am a relatively new musician but my journey has already been filled with so many unforgettable memories. I am so grateful that I mustered up the courage to pursue my true passion. 19 year old me would be ecstatic if she could have seen into the future.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an independent singer, songwriter, producer, audio engineer, and DJ. I provide services in artist development such as social media, songwriting, production, sound recording/mixing. I also provide DJ services for public and private events. I think what sets me apart from others is my wide range of skillsets I have to offer and the knowledge I gained by playing my own producer, manager, marketer, singer, songwriter. Since my first single release in November of 2021 I have acquired over a half a million streams and quadrupled my fanbase to 115,000 followers on instagram. I am also my own PR agent and have a build up of over 50 press articles written about my music online. I also designed my own website and strengthened my SEO myself. Whatever I set my mind to I have accomplished one way or another. I have a strong work ethic and I am not afraid of failure. I pick myself up again when times get rough and I never give up on my goals. I have a wide range of knowledge I can share with aspiring artists and lots of skill sets to offer. I am the proof.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
In my opinion, one of the most rewarding things as an artist is when you see significant improvement in your craft and your time/effort start to pay off. Each milestone of my improvement is what I use as fuel and motivation. Another very rewarding moment as an artist is when fans start to reach out to tell you how your music makes them feel understood or has helped them get through hard times. When my fans first started reaching out about this I was so happy as this is part of what I was writing for. I wanted to have the same impact on my fans as some of my favorite music artists have on me. Lastly, it is so rewarding when your family and friends genuinely acknowledge your improvement and support your dreams/aspirations as a musician.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission as an artist is to share a part of me with my listeners in hopes that they can find confidence, solace, and the feeling of being understood through my writing. I try to write about things that some people might not have the courage to talk about and create music that makes my listeners feel like they can unapologetically be themselves. It can be hard to be open with your emotions in our modern day society so I want to give my listeners a way to feel privately, just by taking in/listening to the music. I believe music is one of the most healing things out there and I feel grateful to be able to contribute to that healing.
