We recently connected with Juliet Artman and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Juliet thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I’m on a mission to write stories that encourage a weary heart to keep smiling. Stories the encourage young women to keep following the Lord no matter what challenges arise.
As a young teen, my family moved to a new state and I lost all the community and stability I had in my life. I knew that God had a plan in all of it, but as a young teen I was so mad at the Lord. None of this felt good. I could not see at all how the Lord was going to use this for my good and His glory. But I had decided to follow Jesus. It was a commitment I had already made years before. I was choosing God’s ways over mine, even when I couldn’t understand.
BUT it was still so hard.
During this time I read a lot of books and I especially fell in love with Contemporary books. Because they took place in the everyday world, I related to it so deeply. Yet, the more I read the more frustrated I became. Characters were not making decisions with the biggest factor I was: what does the Lord think? I longed for stories of teens in today’s world seeking to honor the Lord even through the ups and downs of life.
So I set off to write those stories. Contemporary stories that encourage the weary heart to keep trusting in the Lord through everyday ups and downs.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I wear two hats, author and business owner.
As a teenager, I started as a student in The Author Conservatory. A college alternative program that teaches writing, publishing, and entrepreneurship to gifted young people.
Through The Author Conservatory, I worked on growing my business skills by starting a house cleaning business from scratch and growing it to make $50k in gross revenue before I turned 20. I have gotten to hire a team of young women to serve my clients with me, and continue to grow that business as my main source of income.
The Author Conservatory also taught me the writing and publishing skills needed to have a successful career as an author. My first work of printed fiction was published in fall 2024 in the “Voices of The Future: Stories of Healing and Home” anthology.
This short story captures my heart to inspiring and encouraging teen girls to seek joy in life. Before launch day, I sold 100 copies for the book, and with the fundraiser aspect of the anthology I have been able to buy tickets for two writers conferences in 2025.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started writing this short story about Vanessa working in a cake shop months and months before it was published in the anthology.
This project was the first one I tackled after a massive career shift. I tried to keep pressing forward, but recovering from change takes time. It took about a year of frustrating work to even enjoy this short story. And in the end, the change was in my heart. As I pressed forward, the Lord softened my anger towards plans changing. He gave me eyes to see His kindness. But more than that he taught me how to trust Him.
There were many other times in the process of publishing this short story that I struggled with how things were going. There are always delays in things like this, and learning to be adaptable was a big part of this publication process.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The connections I get to make with people. This year especially I feel like I gained a whole group of friends from launching “Voices Of The Future: Stories of Healing & Home.”
Before launch, I got to invite a whole bunch of people I kind of knew to join my email list for regular updates. Then over the next few months, I got to really connect with those people. Especially members of my street team, have become my friends.
These people have truly become my email list family. They have been with me through the ups and downs of publishing my first pieces of fiction and we have a stronger relationship because of that.
Because of these relationships I gain ideas of what to write about, and truly who I’m writing for.
Being an author is not a solo sport, and I’m so very thankful for these friendships I have because of launching a book in community.
