We recently connected with Julien Elizabeth and have shared our conversation below.
Julien, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Leaping into self-employment and following my heart with my business was a big risk. Before 2013 I was working in Chicago at an advertising agency. It was fast paced with long hours, and a lot of client work. In the beginning I really loved it — for many of the same reasons I love what I do now. After some time though I started to experience burn out and the work just wasn’t fulfilling. When I started practicing yoga regularly (as a way to manage the stress from my job), I knew pretty quickly it was my next career.
I worked hard building myself up as a yoga teacher and coach while still working full time. Eventually I knew it was time to leap. I booked a trip to California that would be more days than I had saved in paid time off, using this as a launching ground to giving my leave notice.
Three months later I was preparing to move to Los Angeles with less than $5000 in savings. I never looked back! I am so grateful for this leap – it has made my life so beautiful!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve been teaching yoga and coaching full-time since 2013 and a professional astrologer since 2017. I’ve been based in Venice Beach for most of those 10 years, seeing clients throughout LA. I’ve always been a big traveler and in 2017 after going through some heartbreak, I started living more nomadically, traveling through South America, Europe and Asia. Still, LA has stayed in my heart and remained home.
I guide people to know, trust and love themselves so that they can navigate major transition from a place of clarity, confidence, and presence. Although this can seem intangible, the impact that self-worth and trust has on our lives is significant. When we live from a place of deeply valuing who we are and the choices we make, the heaviness of life lifts and there’s more spaciousness to move, breathe and choose joy. I am so lit up recognizing this subtle yet powerful growth in my clients and students in a relatively short time.
I am most proud to see someone stand confidently within themselves, able to know what they need and what life they’re creating. I hope my work can elevate others to live from a more soulful and grounded space.
I am influenced by astrology, movement, somatics and embodiment, yoga, Traditional Chinese Medicine, depth psychology, nature, and the practice of slow presence and self-observation. I’ve experienced myself and the healing world evolve significantly in ten years and it’s clear these modalities are inseparable from how I see and experience the world.
That said, I can best be described as practical yet soulful, earthy and ethereal, serious and witty, playful and mature. I differ in a hundred ways and I am very, very human.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I have a background in business and digital marketing, have taken a ton of courses on business, coaching, money mindset, online marketing, email marketing, social media marketing… (seriously, you name it) and I have to say that the most effective strategies I employ are living with radical authenticity and fostering meaningful relationships.
I’ve learned a lot about myself through astrology and human design and these modalities have helped me unwind business practices that don’t actually work for me. In the space I used to fill with being more pushy, I have found that writing, creating and sharing my vision and perspectives from a place of calm confidence will always attract clientele I align with and can support. This requires that I take great care of myself and prioritize creativity, rest and curiosity.
Rather than thinking about how I can scale and garner a wider reach, I prioritize depth and connection. I love partnering with brands, influencers and other teachers to create genuine engagement. Podcasts, special events, collaborations, retreats and trainings all come together from a true desire to create connection and growth for all who engage, To me, this fosters learning and engagement better than any other method and that is my priority.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Curiosity. The openness to learn and willingness to question reality is the backbone of coaching, yoga and astrology. I believe it is the basis for empathy and true connection. Flexing this muscle will make you adaptable, guide you to new opportunities, and impact your ability to create solutions for your clients and grow your business.
