Julie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name of my studio, JVL Salon, holds immense personal significance. It stands for Julie, Victor, and Levi—my two sons, who have been my unwavering source of motivation. As a newly single mom, I reached a pivotal crossroads in life, realizing I needed to make a major career change. Navigating the challenges of being a single Mom, finding a new home, and starting a new chapter for the three of us was both daunting and transformative. Shortly after we settled into our new home, I set out to create a future for us by launching my own studio. Leaving behind a stable 23-year job was a leap of faith, but my determination to provide a better life for my boys fueled my courage. Becoming a successful independent Hair Artist allows me to create cherished memories, spend quality time with my sons, and build a legacy of success. The name JVL Salon is a testament to our journey and the unbreakable bond we share.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a Hair Artist, Studio Owner, Beauty Industry Career Coach with over 20 years experience in the beauty industry. I grew up hanging out in the corner salon, quickly became hooked, and have been devoted to the industry ever since. I often tell the story of my Holiday Barbie 1991 being my “first client ever”.
As an active and busy Hair Artist and Salon Owner, I am acutely aware of all the challenges and roadblocks we face on a daily basis. Every client is unique, and so is their hair! I pour my heart into tailoring each client’s hair color and haircut to reflect their personality and lifestyle, ensuring they feel truly amazing and confident.
I truly believe that building and naturing relationships is the core to a loyal, trustworthy, long lasting relationship.
I am loving Mom to two energetic boys and I spend my time between Baseball and Golf events. I believe it is my role as a Mom and a Mentor to create a lifetime of memories and learning experiences for these young men. My clientele is constantly growing and I am booked out 24 months in advance due to developing and mastering my “Premier Advance Booking” concept. This concept creates security and growing income while still allowing for the free time needed to create work-life balance.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I believe that it’s extremely important to get comfortable with Networking. Hair Artist wear many hats in addition to being an Artist we are content creators, photographers, and master communicators. Although those are wildly important my best source of attracting new potential Clients is my current hair color. I have to admit that I did not intend for my hair color to be a marketing/networking tool but it quickly continued to help grow my clientele and I remember thinking “holy smokes, my hair color has turned into a marketing tool and conversation piece.” I would say daily I have someone approaching me asking me “who does my hair” or guessing that I am a Hair Artist. The beauty of this is that these conversations happen organically and quickly turn into a potential new client. It’s a total bonus that you get the opportunity to have a conversation with a potential client.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
As an active Hair Artist, I can confidently say that Premier Booking (Pre-booking tailored appointments a year in advance) has been a game-changer for my career and work-life balance.
This practice provides me the opportunity to create consistency and a well planned schedule ensuring I can provide exceptional service. It also ensures that I can allocate time for both my professional commitments and personal life, striking a perfect balance between the two.
Premier Booking has not only helped me maintain a steady stream of clients but has also improved my relationships with them. My clients appreciate the ability to book their preferred times well in advance, which enhances their overall experience and satisfaction. This, in turn, has led to increased client loyalty and referrals, further boosting my career.
