We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Julie Skon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Julie below.
Hi Julie, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk that I have ever taken was to go all in, to bet on myself, to heal.
I was 19 when I was assaulted, 22 when I lost my love to gun violence, and 31 getting a divorce with two incredible young daughters to raise. In spite of creating what felt like a beautiful life, I had emotionally hit rock bottom.
I remember thinking, “Tomorrow I will feel better, tomorrow I won’t feel this lost, tomorrow I will find my way.” And then one day, tomorrow came. That is when I had the self-realization that in order to feel the way that I wanted to feel, to create experiences that I wanted to be present for, to live a life that I could feel all the joy, I needed to dig deep and say yes to healing – mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
I started first with reading and writing. I read so many self-help books it could fill a library, and I wrote every day. Then, I found deep healing and happiness with physically pushing myself to the limits. I signed up for challenges and races, trail runs, and lots of hot yoga. Then, I started collecting people, the friends, the voices that had my back and I had theirs. And as the journey continued, I took more classes, gained more certifications and learned from leaders all over the world, what healing is. Over time, healing happened and my purpose became more clear.
I think everyone deserves to take the risk to bet on themselves. To heal trauma. To love their bodies and who they are. To wildly adventure. To find their voice and have community that supports them. I am here to hold that space, support it, build it, and to continue to seek it every single day.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am here to support you in making your dreams come true. I know it sounds cliche, but it’s true.
I started working with individuals and groups as a “trauma healing coach”, because healing trauma was and is my foundation. But, my practice has quickly expanded to encompass so much more. What I have found, and love so much about the work that I am able to do, is watching someone have that breakthrough moment (or moments) where the past no longer holds them back, and magic happens! Life opens up, dreams comes alive, and they start taking the action steps towards creating what it is they truly want to feel and experience.
I weave my training and experience into my work and meet my clients where they are at and what they need at the time. I am certified in multiple modalities, from somatic healing to trauma recovery, health and wellness, meditation and even business development. I coach holistically, from the inside out. I want you to have the tools to release self-limiting beliefs, to navigate your thoughts and emotions, to set healthy boundaries, and to own making empowered choices that light you up!
We all receive invitations for growth and opportunities to heal, whether we take them or not, it really up to us. And, that invitation comes in many forms, emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually. The catalyst could be grief from the loss of someone you love. It could be a relationship shift from breakups or divorce. It shows up when careers no longer feel right and you want to find your purpose. It comes in the form of wanting to learn to love yourself and your body. It could be that the creative project you have always wanted to write or create is calling to you to complete. Or, it could be that you are finally ready to let go of that part of you, or your past, that is holding you back because you are ready to fly!
I implement what I teach, because it drives my happiness. I have chosen to heal trauma because I want to learn from it and not be defined by it. I run my ass down mountains because it frees my soul. I write books because it challenges me to be vulnerable. I teach meditation on Insight Timer because it connects me to the world in the most beautiful peaceful way. I teach workshops and retreats because it challenges me to use my voice. And, I work with people as a coach because I want everyone to feel free to create the life that they desire and deserve.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Vulnerability, authenticity, curiosity, a willingness to take risks, and to listen to that spark of intuition and creativity and run with it.
People want to connect with real people, we crave it! My advice to creatives and small business owners is to put all of YOU into it, your humanness. Where you start and where the journey takes you will be such a wild ride. Don’t wait for perfection, it doesn’t exist. Pour your heart into what you are creating, with an intention that is purposeful and helpful. From that place, you and your business will thrive and grow.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Put an intentional drop in the bucket towards your business growth and development every single day. As an entrepreneur, we don’t live in a 9-5 world anymore.
We also may have kids, families, personal health, and so many elements of life to attend to that needs our full attention.
Growing your business can often be one step at a time, sometimes at crazy hours.
Carve that time out for yourself to make it happen.
That one step (or more) adds up, quickly!
