We recently connected with Julie Munn and have shared our conversation below.
Julie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, what do you think about family businesses? Would you want your children or other family members to one day join your business?
Gwinn Road Design is a mother/daughter business. I, Julie, am Ashley’s mother. We have been together since day one. What works well…… we have a relationship that is incredibly open and honest. This makes it easy to communicate in all aspects during the work day. We also know each other so well. This is a benefit because we are two very different personalities and we balance each other. If I am having an off day, Ashley picks up the slack and visa-versa. For example….. last fall I came down with Covid. I was so sick and we had a video shoot that day. Ashley was able to jump in for me and make all the arrangements that needed to happen for the shoot. I was down for 2 weeks but never worried because I knew Ashley could over see the many aspects of the day to day of running a design company.
We have separate roles in the company, however, we turn to each other often and consult together. Another benefit is we have so much fun! We have to work and so why not laugh and enjoy the day?!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
When I was 14 yrs old my parents built a house. My mom let me pick out everything for my room. I chose floral wallpaper, a basket weave light fixture, white furniture and cozy bedding. I was in my element. Nothing makes me happier than when I am creating. Fast forward 30 years and I decided I wanted to design professionally. Ashley has also had an entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to organize. We founded Gwinn Road Design in 2017 and have grown together through the ups and downs of running a business.
Gwinn Road Design is an interior design studio and curated shoppe that creates warm, collected spaces that express the client’s personality in an elevated way. We layer organic materials, neutral colors, found vintage pieces and timeless modern finishes to create homes that are ideal for all of life’s most meaningful moments.
Our client’s are usually busy family-focused people that have the desire for beauty in their home, but still want functionality. They are sentimental about things and experiences that matter to them.
We are a detail oriented studio that takes all the stress of design and let’s the client enjoy the process of all the aspects coming together that creates an elevated yet un-fussy, well designed home.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Although it is improving, the interior design world is a bit hush hush and it can be difficult to find vendors and trades people. We have to continually do research to find the trades and trades people that align with our concept of bringing our design vision to life.
We love patina, warmth, handcrafted pieces that bring an element of comfort to a home. In order to create this mood, we are constantly sourcing. Although this process takes patience and perseverance, we are obsessed and won’t stop until we make a home come together to reflect our client’s personality.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Gwinn Road Design’s goal is for the home to feel, welcoming, elevated, comforting & understanding. We want our client’s to come home after a busy day and be able to kick their shoes off and exhale from the day.
We believe that if a person is drawn to our design then they should be able to have access to our style, which is why we not only offer full design, but consultations and also an online shoppe. These services provide different touch points to help a person create a home. We believe the moments we spend in our home truly matter!
