We recently connected with Julie Mattson and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Julie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I have been a Registered Nurse for 27 years and, in that time, I have worked in the NICU, Progressive Care Unit, Triage and as a Charge Nurse in the Emergency Room. Approximately 21 years ago, while working in the Emergency Department, I began training as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner and began collecting evidence on adults and children who had been sexually assaulted for all local law enforcement agencies. I became passionate about forensics and wanted to do more. I began training to become a Forensic Nurse Death Investigator, which landed me in Houston, Texas, where I trained and worked for the Harris County Medical Examiner for years before moving back to the Dallas area and working at the Denton County Medical Examiner’s Office, where I have been for the last 12 years. Since that time, I have launched a true crime podcast entitled “Pushing Up Lilies”, which airs on multiple podcast directories and allows me the opportunity to share my stories and share the ins and outs of the career field.
Approximately 10 years ago, I decided that, although I love helping families find closure when they’ve lost a loved one, I wanted people to be happy to see me, instead of always being the nurse that always arrived to see a sexual assault victim or someone who had passed away. I trained in the field of aesthetics and, after working in the corporate world for a very short time, I branched out on my own and started my own business. I went from a 100 square foot room to a 1,500 square foot facility in less than a year. My business continues to grow; therefore, I now own a 4,000 square foot med spa that offers not only medical services, such as IV’s, B12 shots, Botox, Dermal Fillers, microneedling, permanent make-up, Medical Grade Facials and a full skincare line, but also houses hair salon services, a barbershop and aestiticians, who offer waxing, eyelash extensions, facials, brown tint and lamination and lash lifts. The building is in lovely downtown Denton, just south of the square, and offers a posh environment for services, as well as an amazing women’s boutique. This business is my dream and allows me to make people happy by feeling good about themselves!
Julie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I answered a lot of this questions in the previous question, however, I believe what sets me apart from others is that I focus on what bothers the client and don’t make them feel unattractive by pushing multiple services on them. They are all beautiful! I absolutely love the friendships that I’ve developed over the years.
The main thing that I want people to know about me is that their loyalty as a client is of utmost importance to me and I will always do whatever I can to continue to keep these services affordable so, when someone is having a bad day, they can not only have their services done, but can also lean on me as a friend.
My brand has helped me to create loyal customers and connections that mean the world to me. We were voted 2022 Best of Denton in the salon services category and will continue to strive to do what we can for the community, as well as for our clients and the people of Denton. As we expand our menu of services, we would love to continue to develop new relationships.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe that my previous work relationships with law enforcement, attorneys and nurses helped my business grow, as I have worked with them for years as an RN and a Forensic Investigator and they know that I am a professional who is very focused on what I do. Those relationships that had been built in the past is where it all began. I always joke and say that I started small and just wanted to unwrinkle my friends. Little did I know, my friends would be the reason that my name became well known and the business continues to grow beyond my imagination. It started with friends who referred their siblings, children and parents to me and continues to grow!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for me has been social media. We stay active on Facebook and Instagram and are planning to integrate Tik Tok and Pinterest into our social media platforms. We started out small and have grown so fast! Word of mouth has helped tremendously! When someone asks a question on social media about where to obtain the services that The Filling Station offers, our name is always mentioned multiple times, which helps us gain new customers without even realizing it. For that, I am incredibly thankful! I feel like maintaining professionalism and excellence will continue to help us grow!
