We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Julie Matos a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Julie, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?

Success in the fashion industry requires a blend of creativity, perseverance, and adaptability. It begins with a clear vision—a compelling goal that inspires and directs your efforts. Creativity is paramount, as the industry thrives on innovation and unique perspectives. Equally crucial is perseverance: the relentless pursuit of your objectives, even when faced with setbacks. Adaptability ensures you remain flexible, ready to pivot and embrace new trends and strategies as the fashion landscape evolves.

My journey into celebrity styling is a testament to these principles. I received my big break when I was asked to style Leighton Meester for a Rolling Stone photoshoot. With less than 24 hours to pull everything together, I had to work hard and smart. Tapping into my network and utilizing my skills, I managed to curate a look that was both stunning and fitting for the occasion. This experience not only solidified my passion for fashion but also launched my career in celebrity styling.

Networking is essential; building relationships with industry professionals can open doors and provide valuable insights. Continuous learning, embracing feedback, and staying attuned to market demands are also vital. Ultimately, success in fashion is about maintaining a balance between ambition and resilience, knowing that every challenge is an opportunity for growth and reinvention.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I entered the fashion industry by working in the fashion department of May Department Stores in Boston, where I produced and styled fashion shows. My collaboration with major fashion publications and the launch of new collections paved the way for my move to New York City, where I quickly established myself as a freelance fashion editor and advertising campaign stylist.

Today, I offer a comprehensive range of services including consulting, fashion styling, brand and editorial styling, TV & Movies costume design, creative direction, and image consulting services. I work with both high-profile celebrities and private clients around the globe, providing tailored fashion solutions that elevate their style and confidence. I love mixing high fashion with vintage pieces, creating unique and timeless looks for my clients.

One of my proudest achievements is helping my private clients step out of their comfort zones, transforming their appearance and boosting their self-esteem. Additionally, I am committed to promoting sustainability in my work, integrating eco-friendly practices and materials whenever possible.

My ability to make clients look and feel good is a testament to my skill and passion for fashion. My dedication to my craft, sustainability, and my clients’ well-being sets me apart in the industry, making me a trusted and influential stylist.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

One of the most fulfilling aspects of creativity lies in the capacity to convey oneself through original and inventive means, witnessing the transformation of ideas into tangible realities. Whether it be through art, literature, music, or any other form of expression, the act of crafting something meaningful from the void and sharing it with others is profoundly rewarding. Additionally, the opportunity to meet people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives while traveling the world enriches this creative journey, offering new insights and inspiration at every turn.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

Navigating the path of motherhood while maintaining a balance between career and personal life has been an incredible journey, filled with both joys and challenges. It’s been a profound learning experience, teaching me to prioritize and be present for my family and friends when it matters most. Along the way, I’ve also experienced significant shifts in my career and personal life, requiring me to pivot and adapt to new circumstances. These transitions have brought both uncertainty and growth, pushing me to embrace change and explore new opportunities. Despite the difficulties, these pivots have ultimately led to greater fulfillment and alignment with my values, allowing me to carve out a life that is meaningful and rewarding for both myself and my loved ones.
