Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Julie Kidd. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Julie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I love to write and I come from a long line of award-winning writers that instilled in me a deep belief in the power of words to inform persuade and evoke emotion. I also love to perform stand-up comedy. The joy of being a stand-up comedian and making people laugh is a potent elixir that brings solace, heals wounds and forges connections with audiences everywhere. It’s no coincidence, I’ve been performing and writing about the same amount of time (over 30 years). I guess it goes hand-in-hand, I’m either holding a microphone or a pen. Okay, sometimes a glass of wine. I believe we all possess the skills to achieve our heart’s desires. However, self-doubt, fear, and perceived imperfections often hold us back. Allow yourself the time to learn and pursue your passions. Thankfully, with the Internet, a world of teaching is right at your fingertips. Be patient and invest the necessary time.

Julie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
It was always been my dream to perform comedy and to write books. Like most comedians, I started doing open mics and then built from there. I won a few comedy contests and then I was asked to perform and participate in the “Hilarious Housewives” contest on ABC The View, and I won. I began hosting on a local talk show, “What’s Up OC” and had the fortunate honor of interviewing extremely talented comedians. I also produced the “Funniest Housewives” show, which went on to be the longest running all-headliner female show in the United States. My stepsister, Cindy Burns was the original producer. Sadly, she passed away in 2016 and I carried it on and kept the show going until end of 2023. I published a book titled “The Funniest Housewives – When Laughter and Inspiration Collide” that shines a light on the hilarious and heartfelt journey of female comedians who took a leap of faith – from the initial struggles and through their resilience and determination to break through the societal and industry barriers in a male dominated industry.
I am currently working on a documentary to share the incredible story of the Funniest Housewives and hoping it will be out in the next 12 months. When I wasn’t performing and taking care of kids, I was writing books. I believe telling our story is very healing. Through writing, we have the power to reflect on our past, understand our present and envision our future. Sharing our story can provide a sense of catharsis and freedom as we own and embrace our narrative. I believe that is the reason journaling is so popular. It offers an ongoing avenue for positivity, emotional and mental healing on this journey we call life. I am a published author and my jokes have been featured in numerous magazines and comedy books. I have also completed another book which is a how-to guide to assist new writers in writing their first book. We all have a story, and the world is waiting to hear your story. The book is titled “Just Write The Damn Book” (c) and it will be available for purchase on Amazon on July 24, 2024.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Over the decades, I’ve read numerous books that talk about dreaming, positive thinking, and manifesting. As a lifelong dreamer, these books have propelled me towards achieving my dreams and goals. I continue to thrive and wholeheartedly encourage everyone to find books that can guide them positively and successfully on their journey.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
After performing and pursuing my goals and living the life I created for myself, my son passed away on Dec. 10, 2021. My world stopped. My passion stopped. My heart stopped. After a few months, I decided to take a trip to Costa Rica to heal and grieve and be one with nature. After a few days into my trip, on a whim I decided to buy a condo in Costa Rica. It was the closest thing to Heaven I had ever experienced and part of me thinks my son that passed away guided me there. I went back to California and packed up all my belongings and sold everything, donated or gave it away. My friends and family thought I had lost my mind due to my grief. If someone would’ve told me my life would change so drastically, I wouldn’t have believed them. But here I am and it’s been two years. There’s no comedy in the part of Costa Rica where I live, but I’m bringing the laughter. It’s humbling to start over but it’s also healing. When I’m not making the locals laugh, I still continue to write, work on a couple documentaries and enjoy living the pura vida lifestyle.
