We were lucky to catch up with Julie (‘Jules’) McGill recently and have shared our conversation below.

Julie (‘Jules’), appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?

From starting my own law practice to failed restaurants and long-distance moves alone, I’m no stranger to risk. But none of these things prepared me for the risks I’ve taken since entering the world of professional astrology. Holding myself out to the world as an astrologer is the most profoundly vulnerable thing I will ever do. One’s decision to become an astrologer transcends the normal calculation of vocational considerations – like resources, education and opportunity. In my case, simply labeling myself an astrologer entailed intimate personal disclosure; it laid bare my innermost beliefs and views on life for the world to see.

Looking back, I recognize that the personal risk entailed in “coming out” to my community as an astrologer is the perfect price of entry for my profession. It forced me to do the very thing I encourage clients to do: own who they truly are to the greatest possible extent. Since doing that, my life has been enriched beyond my wildest dreams, and I have the privilege of helping clients all over the world.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My brand name – The Cosmic Gem – conveys the fundamental belief I want to share using astrology: that every individual is a perfectly designed jewel created to shine a light only they can shine. Astrology uses something called the “natal chart” to help clients understand, embrace and capitalize on their uniqueness.

Each person’s astrological profile (the “natal chart”) is much more complex than claiming one particular Zodiac sign. Discovering the intricacy of one’s chart suddenly brings a blurred photo of self into focus. The seemingly chaotic and disconnected pieces of your life’s journey can be united and understood like never before. With unbelievable accuracy, a professional astrologer can predict specific timeframes for growth, change, challenge, even loss. We offer peace by explaining the deeper meaning and purpose of every season of life. My goal is that every single client leaves our sessions knowing they are exactly where they’re supposed to be!

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?

Several years ago I began writing free monthly newsletters with an astrology forecast, explaining the energies ahead and how to navigate them. It was a challenge to make that time commitment as I was still practicing law AND offering 1:1 astrology sessions, workshops, etc. Nonetheless, I got started and was shocked at the amount of feedback and communication the newsletters generate with my following. More bookings came, more referrals, plus a general sense that my work was helping people live better lives on a day to day basis. The writing process also helped fine tune my voice and unique approach amongst a sea of talented astrologers.

Two years later, writing newsletters still takes 1-2 full workdays a month. But I take pride in the offering and especially my solid readership rate of ~ 70%. I hope someday I look back and see that the newsletter not only served as a way to foster loyalty but a seed for some bigger breakthrough in my journey.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

The Cosmic Gem wasn’t my initial business name. It wasn’t even my second. At the time I began this journey, my mission was to open a doorway to astrology for others in public forums. I did talks in yoga studios, coffee shops, wine bars, lifestyle conventions…anywhere that would have me. In that process, I catered my first two business names to what I believed others would like. Total mistake!

Three years in, I had to pivot. My label didn’t inspire me nor convey who I am. That’s when I adopted “The Cosmic Gem” name – a name that both reflects who I want to be and who I believe every one of my clients are. My love and devotion to my astrology business and my unique voice as an astrologer has blossomed every day since.
