We were lucky to catch up with Julie Jordan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Julie , thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
In the hair industry many people love the aspect of the doing hair and being creative which is definitely part of what we do however it’s not always that way. We are a customer service business, your guest is your first and top priority and making them feel their best is the only focus. We don’t know what really happens outside of the salon or what our guests are dealing with, we have a unique perspective into their lives but many carry secrets too. Our time with our guests can make a huge impact on they way they see themselves and how they carry themselves. I never forget that how I treat people is what they remember more than anything else.
Julie , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a hair artist/designer. I have loved art and creating as far as I can remember it just brings peace to my soul. I knew I wanted to work on a field that I could use my hands and be active but so many creative fields required computers. Computers tend to not like me and I knew I was not going to be fulfilled working at a desk. I found the hair industry and never looked back. I have a unique perspective to cutting and just see the shape as a sculpture. Color and color theory make me such a color nerd bc I love the how’s and why of the science that goes into making the color and then how to create the end results not only with the color itself but also what the guest has come in with already on their hair. Everyday has a challenge and a way to learn and grow.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Resilience for me is a huge piece of my story. I have Crohns, an autoimmune disorder that effects a lot of my life. I have had multiple surgeries and painful days I have to work through. This gives me a unique perspective that while on the outside I look fine I am often struggling on the inside. I keep this information fresh with me because every person that sits with me, works with me or collaborates with me may have a similar story and it takes bravery, determination and grit to feel awful and still chase dreams and make visions a reality
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Client’s do not belong to us. Every interaction everytime needs to be the highest level of customer service you can offer. There are lots of people doing hair and we are all looking to aquire guests in our chair. There is a formula to follow and understand while building clients. First they do not belong to us, wow them everytime.
Guests want product, they want to duplicate the style you create. Have product out and go through how when and why you are using on them do it in real time, by the time you are checking out it is too late and become overwhelming.
Always pre-book the next appointment and know when that date is. “To maintain the look we created today I need to see you in 5 weeks does March 1st at 2 work for you?”
Ask for referrals from the guests you love!
