We recently connected with Julie Eddy and have shared our conversation below.
Julie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I think I’d have to say my new EP “Southbound” that I’m getting ready to release at the end of January. I’ve spent the last year and a half writing and choosing the songs, being in the studio, and shooting the videos/visuals for it and it’s truly been a labor of love. I wrote 6 of the 7 songs with my co-writers and friends and then chose an outside cut for the final track. I was very intentional when starting this project on making sure every piece of my artistry and personality was represented in this EP and I’m so proud of how it has turned out. I absolutely can’t wait to share it with the world, let it live it’s life, and see where it goes!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a country singer/songwriter living in Nashville, Tennessee. I grew up in a small town in South Dakota and have been pursuing my music career full time in Music City since early 2021. After several years of piano lessons as a child, I begged my parents for a guitar for my 13th birthday and taught myself to play on YouTube. I started playing out around town wherever I could at fundraisers and weddings, eventually working my way into bars, restaurants, and bigger venues. Before moving to Nashville, I worked many different jobs in addition to music to help pay my bills but my goal was always to get to the point in my career where I could pursue music full time. Throughout my many years of performing some of my largest shows have involved opening for award winning artists including Justin Moore, Granger Smith, Brett Young, Travis Denning, Sam Hunt, and Grammy-Award winning duo Dan + Shay.
I now play several shows a month at various widely known venues in Nashville such as The Basement, The Listening Room Cafe, The Local, Tin Roof, 3rd and Lindsley, The Twelve Thirty Club, and several of the most sought-after bars on Broadway. In addition to my artistry, my love for songwriting has not wavered landing several cuts by other Nashville-based country artists in 2021 including Rachel LaRen, Brooke Lynn, and Corey Wise.
If you’re new to knowing me or my music the first thing you should know is nothing is off limits! We write about everything around here from heartbreak, to finding love, to missing family, and making one-too-many mistakes. I’m proud of my vulnerability in my writing and find that being bold and saying what you truly feel, rather than what you think others want to hear, is the best way to connect to others through your music. I love to find ways to turn regular phrases you hear all the time into a clever hook or a concept for a song and I absolutely love finding interesting chord progressions to lay melodies on top of. If I have a day off, you’ll almost always find me with my guitar in my office playing nonsense.
In 2021 I have released 4 singles leading up to the announcement of my 7 song EP “Southbound”, releasing January 27, 2023. Along with my EP, I will be hosting a release show at one of Nashville’s favorite live music venues, Analog at the Hutton Hotel, featuring special guests Rachel LaRen, Brooke Lynn, Erin Grand, and Brooke Lee. If you’re in Nashville, grab a ticket and say hi at the show!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me has always been being able to create something that someone can relate to. I have found so much peace through music in my own life and I want to create that for others as much as I possibly can. To be able to take a feeling I have and put it into a song that someone hears and then thinks “gosh, I feel that deep in my core”… that’s all I’ll ever need.
I will never forget the first time someone came up to me and told me about how a song of mine had helped them through a hard time. It still gives me goosebumps every time I think about that moment. I’m blessed to have had a few of those throughout the years and they stop me in my tracks every time. As humans we feel so many emotions on both large and small scales, anytime I can contribute to someone knowing that they’re not alone in what they’re feeing makes every hard part of this journey worth it a million times over.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
For an independent artist, the best support we can ask for is for people to listen to and share our music and come to our shows! If you come across an artist that you love, follow their social media and streaming profiles and put their songs on your playlists that you love to listen to. You can also share their music on your social profiles or with your friends and family when they release something new or if you come across something they’ve had out for a while that you love. The more people who can have the opportunity to discover us, the better opportunity we have to grow our fan-base!
If you are someone who loves to go to live shows, look up where these artists are playing and buy tickets to their shows or purchase and rock their merchandise! A lot of the money that independent artists make from merchandise and live shows goes into their costs of recording/releasing new music or paying their band! Every follow, share, and purchase counts and makes a big difference to us!
