Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Julie Dammar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Julie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
The turning point in my career was when I realized that my personal experiences could positively impact others. I started Selective Hearing as a Facebook live broadcast, where I initially spoke about my life and the traumas I had faced. I shared my story and thoughts on life every week, never anticipating how significant or impactful sharing my story would become. At the time, I needed to share how my experiences had affected me as a part of my healing journey. However, everything changed the day I realized my story could help others. At that moment, I became more than just a writer and a podcaster documenting my experience. I became an activist and a true champion for the healing of the mind, body, and spirit of others.
It was scary to stand in front of people and reveal the not-so-pretty, unhappy, and hurting parts of myself. But in doing so, I discovered a newfound bravery and vulnerability that allowed me to connect with others on a deeper level. Sharing my story opened up a world of beautiful discussions and allowed me to see and understand the stories of others. And it all started with my decision to be honest and authentic with myself and those around me.
“Selective Hearing” has expanded beyond being a podcast and positive lifestyle blog. It has become a source of hope for its listeners, offering a safe space for open and honest conversations and encouraging people to live unapologetically and authentically. Each week’s podcast and accompanying blog remind us that we are all connected in this human experience and that no one is ever truly alone. One of the show’s recurring questions is, “What does Selective Hearing mean to you?” Selective Hearing is not listening only to what you want to hear; to genuinely understand others, you must first understand yourself. Awareness of oneself and experiences is the first step towards understanding and empathy for others.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
“Selective Hearing” is not just a name but a philosophy, a guiding light in the often tumultuous journey toward self-discovery and genuine happiness. Being authentic is at the core of our identity. It’s about peeling back the layers of societal expectations and the masks we wear to fit into various molds to reveal the raw, unedited version of ourselves. It’s about standing in our truth, acknowledging our imperfections, and recognizing that these so-called flaws are not blemishes but unique attributes that make us who we are.
I champion the idea that true fulfillment comes from listening intently to our inner voice, understanding its whispers and roars, and making life choices that resonate with our deepest values and desires. This means making decisions that might not always align with mainstream expectations but are in harmony with our authenticity. I created the Selective Hearing Podcast as a way to normalize conversations that are genuine and transparent. Because these things are essential in everything, from the relationships we build to the services and mental health resources we offer. I want to encourage others to approach every situation with a deep understanding, an open heart, and a judgment-free mindset, creating a safe space for others to explore and express their true selves.
My commitment to authenticity is not just about encouraging others to be their most genuine selves; it’s about leading by example. Every step I take and every message I share is imbued with honesty and a deep respect for the individual journeys of those I interact with. Selective Hearing is more than a brand, a podcast, or a weekly blog; it is a community of individuals united in the belief that authenticity is not just the key to happiness and fulfillment but the foundation of a life well-lived.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe that my reputation is based on my choosing to be transparent and empathetic with everyone I meet. My words are not just empty promises. I take pride in doing everything I say I will do and in my ability to communicate when something is beyond my capacity. We are all human and learning and growing; my core is founded on that.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Honesty will always lead to success. We are all seeking genuine human connections, and the more honest and open I am, the more people will connect with me and be willing to share their experiences with others. Someone told me that “living your life could ultimately permit someone else to live theirs.” So, I will keep living, being honest, and extending my hand to inspire others to live freely and authentically.
