We were lucky to catch up with Juliana Cuervo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Juliana, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Being a creative its aconstant learning. I think i’ve trough a lot of upside down moments where patience and selfcompasiont has been the most important tool to keep going every day. The only way i think i could found to speed up my learning process it’s actually practicing the craft when i can. To be honest i wish i could practice everyday, but bills and other kind stuff are also part of this journey. This last one with my self impostor has been my personal obstacles, since time and comparison always appears.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Im Juliana Cuervo a Dj, producer and illustrator from Medellín- Colombia. I studied animation film in Buenos Aires argentina in 2010, since then i’ve benn work in visual development projects as a freelance artist for almost 13 years now. On the other side I’m a dj and produer, been practicing this craft for almost 14 years now and have been made music and play around the globe since 2018. I consider myself a mixed media artist, as i found a profund inspiration in many things.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
As I mentioned before during my last 15 years i’ve been living so many upside down moments. One of them was was many years ago (almost 10 years now). When i finished high school I decided to pursuit an engineer career, my father is an engineer and all i wanted by that moment was to get an appoval from him. I was completely sad with what i was doiing, so I decided to quit in order to study something related with arts. I wanted to study music by that moment, but my father told me tht i will never have the “ear” of a truly musician. This words put me a lot of limits that i had to broke during my last 14 years learning the craft of music productions and also illustration. I feel proud of my self now and understand also the fear that a father can feel about something they don’t know.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Believing That hiper productivity its good. Ive had dealing ith this from my last 3-4 years. Unlearning the psicopath idea that I’ve must do somthing every day and that where more occupied i was more important person I was as well. This also correspond to a lot of cultural behavior we receivend during our childhood, believeing that being an adult its a bunch of work, no rest and no love and family. Unlearning thiswas truly important for me, lot of things i’ve lost during thhis proccess but I must say that even with the pain I caused myself and others with my abscense i really believe this experience gave me more now than everything.
