We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Julian Watanabe-Neis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Julian below.
Julian, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Our ethos is based around giving back to the artist community. However, we’ve had to pivot over the first years as only working with artists is a very unstable way to run a business. Even though our bread and butter is not working with artists anymore, we still strive to keep this same work ethic and ethos even till today.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We run a video production company. That means we do all steps of a production from pre-production to production to post-production. We initially worked on a lot of music videos with independent artists. We were tired of the whole rapping/performing to the camera aesthetic and wanted to bring a more elevated, narrative driven, refined style to the table; after all it is called visual story-telling for a reason. Today we work both alongside some artists and companies.
Have you ever had to pivot?
We had pushed very hard our first year and half to make music videos the bread and butter of the business, but through many different experiences we learned the differences in the work styles from a individual artist to conglomerate corporations. We soon had to make the pivot to build relationships outside of our sphere and make a pivot for music videos to corporate/branded work.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Our videos have a specific style. Even when we work with corporate clients, we edit our videos with a music video style to it. Cutting to the beat, connecting the visual to the audio that’s playing, etc. we strive to bridge the world of audio and visual with our work to bring a cohesive piece together for our client.
