We were lucky to catch up with Julian Robertson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Julian, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Well, my journey in regards to having aspirations begins my freshmen year of high school. For the majority of my life (until my junior year in college) I played basketball; and that was something I had hopes of pursing towards the professional level. However, my freshman year of high school before one of my high school basketball games, one of my friends let me listen to music on his iPod. I began listening to a Nas song called “New York State of Mind.” I probably listened to the song 10 times before the game started. Afterwards I went back and listened to his first album “illmatic.” Nas has since been my favorite rapper/MC of all time. It was at that moment that I knew being a music artist that was intentional about lyrics and quality meaning was something I wanted to pursue.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Julian Robertson. I’m an up and coming MC, whose music is predicated on lyricism, intentionally and storytelling. Ultimately, I want to motivate people/listeners with my music. I want to uplift those who listen while also storytelling in regards to relatable, everyday situations and obstacles. The overall aspects that I’m most proud of in regards to the music that I make is that it’s not “trendy” music. It’s not music that follows the waves and trends of the times. It’s true and authentic music in which I aim to resonate with people who go through real life situations as well as pursuing dreams and aspirations on their journey.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Yes absolutely. One of my favorite books and a book that has had a HUGE impact on myself and my overall perspective regarding how I think and view different things is a book called “The Alchemist.” This is by far one of the most powerful books I’ve read. One of the key “take aways” from this book is described in the book as our “personal legend.” What this is— is our own personal journey in life. We all have a purpose and our own individual journey within life. We all have the ability to seek that out for ourselves. However we must have the courage to seek it out and find it for ourselves. It’s something only you can do for yourself. No one else can do it for you. It’s your life!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson that I had to unlearn is “waiting for the right time.” I think holistically we’ve all heard of this phrase and while planning, preparing and being diligent is imperative and necessary, just starting whatever you’re looking to do is the most important step. Time is going to continue to tick irregardless of if you start or wait. Thus simply going after your aspirations is extremely important. I believe traveling has really taught me this. I really enjoy traveling internationally and throughout my travels and experiences it’s really just taught me to just GO FOR IT.
