We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Julian Morales a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Julian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first knew that I wanted to be a filmmaker when I saw the film “Blade Runner” for the first time with my father when I was in film school. The film put the fire in me, to want to tell stories that were complex and cinematic, and after that I made a short film that was very inspired by “Blade Runner” and my passion for filmmaking grew. Then with each short film I made, and watching more films from other countries and eras, my life became fully committed to this career path of being a Writer/Director.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I enjoy telling stories featuring complex stories in a cinematic & immersive fashion. I learned the basics of filmmaking in film school, but I got more advanced when I made my own short films outside of school. All of my short films, for the exception for one, are all micro-budget and independently funded. Which taught me a skill in maximizing my budgets, using what little resources I have to make my vision come to fruition. Making a lot of shorts have taught me many lessons that I wouldn’t have learned in film school, I do believe that practice makes perfect. While I may not achieve it, I do strive to want to attain it, and make the best film possible.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is getting to work with others, there’s been so many times where from working with my cast & crew that my film improves from what I planned originally. The best idea can come from anyone on a set, and I love keeping discussions open during a scene, to see if there’s other avenues a scene can go, that best tells my story. Being a director, you act as a filter for ideas, and getting to collaborate with talented people is so satisfying and exciting.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Making my first feature film this year was a major endeavor and endurance test for me. We shot it in 10 days over 6 months, and staying in the creative zone while working a job outside of film, was hard. Over the 10 days we faced different challenges me and my team, having crew members replaced, location changes, script revisions. But we together kept the passion alive, stayed focused, and were enthusiastic throughout. Right until we finally wrapped our film last month, and now as we work through post-production, I’m incredibly proud of the work we did together.
