We recently connected with Julian Fulco Perron and have shared our conversation below.

Julian, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?

In an era where digital tools and technology offer endless possibilities, my upcoming single “Delicate” is more than just a song—it’s a homage to the pioneering artists of the past. This track reflects a deep respect for those who crafted timeless music without the conveniences of modern technology. By embracing the limitations they faced, “Delicate” connects us to the raw, authentic roots of musical creativity.

Julian, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

About Julian Fulco Perron:

Labeled as an art-pop rock singer/songwriter, Julian Fulco Perron combines elements of power pop, psychedelic rock, funk music, folk artistry, and experimental genres to create music that shows his willingness to explore as a multi-instrumentalist and producer. Influenced by the writing and recording techniques of Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney, JFP is able to create layers of sound featuring full horn and string sections, mellotron, and vintage keyboards.

Known for his DIY approach to music and video production, JFP writes, records, and produces all of his own music, and has also created visually stunning music videos for each of his releases.

Experimentation is nothing new for JFP, whose 2020 debut album Dreamland has been cited by Bolder Beat as “lush, beautiful, and disorienting psychedelia,” and featured a batch of music videos shot by Julian on Super 8 film from the 1960s. JFP continued to change and adapt his sound in 2022 with his second album In My Garden, which was identified as a folk-rock-inspired expedition.

Channeling the spirit of the 60s and 70s, he ponders, “What if I were an artist back then? What melodies and lyrics would echo through those times?”

He delves into the mindset of artists facing the limitations of analog technology and instruments often lacking today’s multifaceted options. Julian aims to craft modern compositions with a reimagined view of the music of yesteryear.

Beyond the notes and rhythms, he immerses himself in the aesthetics of the past – donning vintage fashion that whispers of nostalgia. His commitment also extends to the visual realm, using film to shoot his music videos, capturing the authentic essence of an era where celluloid was the canvas for artistic expression.

In a world saturated with modern possibilities, this musician intentionally restricts himself, offering listeners a genuine glimpse into the artistic constraints of a golden musical age.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

Creating “Delicate” was an intentional journey into minimalism and authenticity, a decision to strip back the layers of modern production and connect more deeply with the essence of songwriting. The process involved using vintage equipment, such as analog synths and gear, as well as shooting many of my music videos on film, which were staples for many iconic musicians before digital editing was a possibility. This not only challenged me as an artist but also enriched the emotional depth of the music.

This project stands as a testament to the idea that sometimes, looking backward helps us move forward more thoughtfully. It’s a reminder that in our high-speed world, there’s profound value in slowing down and considering the deliberate, meticulous approaches of those who paved the way for today’s artists. Through “Delicate,” I hope to honor the legacy of past musicians and inspire current and future generations to appreciate the richness that comes from embracing the challenges of sparse, technology-limited environments.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?

The decision to use these tools was inspired by the stories of artists who had to record and mix with what was physically in the room with them. There were no software plugins or undo buttons; every note played was a commitment, and every sound captured was a permanent imprint on the tape. This method taught me the value of each musical element and the importance of intentionality in every chord and lyric.

“Delicate” aims to resonate with listeners by showcasing the beauty that can emerge from simplicity. The song’s themes of vulnerability and intensity are underscored by the organic warmth of analog sounds, which invoke a sense of nostalgia and timelessness. In doing so, the track not only pays tribute to the past but also highlights how these age-old techniques can enhance contemporary music.
