Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Julian Feifel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Julian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
When thinking of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on, one that immediately comes to mind is Mandoki Soulmates, a band I’ve been working with for 20+ years. It’s been quite a ride with them, starting as a touring and session guitarist then joining on the creative side as a writer on the last two albums. The reception the music has gotten from the audience has been more than I could have imagined, watching it rise up the charts, even going #1 in Hungary and receiving a Gold award. Being able to create with legendary musicians like Simon Phillips, Ian Anderson, Steve Lukather, Bobby Kimball, Midge Ure, Al Di Meola, Randy Brecker, and Till Brönner, people that I respect and admire very much, has brought me great pride and joy.
Another project that comes to mind when thinking of meaningful projects for me is the relaunch of artist Alec Joseph (AJ), a 25 year old artist I’ve been developing since he was 17 years old. When he was a teenager, AJ was a successful pop artist, though he reached a point where he wanted to do more artful music and be more experimental in the approach. When he shared this with me, I was excited to dive in and craft a new sound with no bouandaries of what it could be. We’ve created a lot of the music together in different ways, from remote sessions over Zoom to retreats in nature in places like Joshua Tree, Big Bear, and Yosemite. This new project will be launching in 2024 and it is truly one of a kind.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started teaching myself guitar as a kid, then began playing in different bands as a teenager in my hometown, Munich. I enrolled at MGI (Munich Guitar Institute) and after graduating, I became a teacher there. Not too long after, I got signed to a major label, Sony/BMG. I started producing and writing for artists like Gil Ofarim, Peter Schilling, Mia Aegerter, No Angels and more. I was always fascinated with combining my skills as a guitarist with electronic instruments, crossing boarders between organic music like singer-songwriter or indie and electronic music like hiphop and club/dance music.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal for me as a creative person is always to do exactly what the present moment is asking for. Depending on the vibe of the song or piece of art, it is my mission to enhance what it could be to the fullest
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is getting to collaborate with other creatives of different backgrounds with other perspectives and techniques. I am constantly inspired and challenged to create something new and out of the box when working with other artists.
