We recently connected with Julian Crosson-Hill and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Julian thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I started my business in 2019. At that time, I was 49 and had built a solid career in software engineering. I was leading multiple teams and managers. Throughout my 25-year career in software engineering, though, I’ve always had a strong desire to do more with my spirituality. I often volunteered at various spirituality festivals and conventions and taught workshops and classes. I just hadn’t figured out how to make a living at it or use it to help people live better lives.
In 2019, I got a certification as a yoga teacher, which is how I began my business. A friend’s offhand comment that I should be their coach led me to obtain my certification as a spiritual life coach. Starting a business when you’re at or near the pinnacle of a career can bring some extra challenges. In software engineering, incomes are higher than in other industries, which can make starting a new business or career really feel daunting.
If I were to meet my younger self, I’d tell them to get a life coach certification much earlier in life and start this business when they have fewer obligations and aren’t quite so far along in a different career. Not that I regret anything about starting when I did. If nothing else, I serve as the perfect example that it’s never too late to follow your dreams.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m an ICF-certified spiritual life & business coach. Under my business, Priest of Inanna, I operate several websites through which I provide services to my target clients. I help people find their magic and change the world. When we’re children, we are unrestrained in expressing our authentic essence. As we grow older, adults and others tell us that we need to be or act a certain way, and over time, we lose our magic. When we reconnect to the magic that is the purest, most authentic expression of our soul, it empowers us to create lives of meaning and purpose, build spiritual businesses that attract our perfect clients, and impact the world that leads to change for the better.
I do this through spiritual life & business coaching, tarot readings, human design, and workshops & classes. I got into this work through my lifelong pursuit of spirituality, particularly Goddess spirituality, and witchcraft. As a lifelong believer in magic, I learned that the greatest magic we possess is the authentic expression of our own soul essence. As a sensitive child, I noticed that there were so many ways that the world could be better and certainly kinder. I’ve always desired to use my magic to improve the world, and now I help empower my clients to do the same.
I host the Answer Your Unique Calling podcast, which focuses on building a life of meaning, magic, and purpose. I also frequently discuss creating a spiritual business expressing your soul’s essence.
Under the queerspirituality.net website, I also coach gay and bisexual men on rediscovering their magic through coming out coaching and life coaching for building a life of more authenticity and purpose. I’m also the host of the Queer Spirituality Podcast, where I explore various spiritual ideas through the lens of queer people and their stories and experience.
My approach to coaching is to view each client as inherently whole and infinitely creative. My role is to help them rediscover their magic, embrace their true self, and rekindle their magic. Human design is one of my favorite tools for this. Human Design is a system that blends astrology, the I-Ching, Kabbalah, and the Chakras to understand the energetic blueprint of your physical form. The goal of human design is to strip away all the conditioning that pulls us away from who we truly are so that we can live a life of authenticity that is aligned with our natural gifts and strengths. I provide human design readings and workshops, and I incorporate human design into my coaching.
The tarot is another tool for self-discovery that I utilize. I began reading tarot 32 years ago, and it’s still a system that I continue to gain a new and deeper appreciation for. I provide tarot readings, and I utilize tarot in my coaching work.
I will be launching mythandmagic.net later this summer, where I will help those interested in magic and witchcraft learn more about how to utilize these tools to create more empowerment and freedom in their lives.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
This is such an easy one for me. I had to unlearn being a perfectionist. Growing up, my father was demanding of his children. Any grade on a report card below an A was unacceptable in our household. I always felt under intense pressure to be good at anything I did to win his approval. As I got older, I learned not to try to do something unless I knew I could do it well. There was no good enough or grace for being new to something. It was either perfect or it was a failure.
As a business owner and a coach, you must let go of this mindset. In business, you will be challenged to learn many new skills, and you won’t be good at all of them. I had to learn this lesson quickly because it was holding me back in the early days of my business. I delayed starting a podcast because I struggled with producing it. I held back on creating videos because I couldn’t edit them well. Eventually, I learned that sometimes it’s more important to show up authentically than perfectly. This is a hard-learned lesson that I now emphasize with my spiritual entrepreneur clients.
Have you ever had to pivot?
As a coach, I’ve made several mini pivots in my business. One of the things new coaches learn is that it is impossible to serve everyone. I initially started my business focusing on helping people find their soul mission or purpose. As my business has grown and evolved, I’ve found that the messaging around that didn’t align with what I felt my soul’s mission was and didn’t align with everything I was doing in my business with human design. My initial pivot was to change my messaging towards limitless possibilities because I felt that human design helped me understand that many more possibilities were available to me than I realized. But that didn’t feel quite right either, and I felt like there were so many coaches, authors, and speakers talking about limitless possibilities, particularly around manifesting your desires. After meditating on it and thinking about what my work with the LGBTQ+ community, spiritual entrepreneurs, and coaching clients has in common, I arrived at “find your magic and change the world”. It also connects to my teaching and mentoring work in the witchcraft and goddess spirituality communities. Pivots like this always happen in business, and I think it’s important to stay connected to your higher power and intuition and allow yourself to go with the flow until you find the right alignment.
