We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Julian Cavazos a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Julian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My mission as a family and event photographer is to deliver images that are filled with natural, authentic emotion. I want my clients to look back on their photos time and time again and relieve those memories captured, and have it be part of their legacy.
Julian, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I discovered photography by accident. As part of my Communications major in college, I took a photojournalism class. I had never used a camera before, and had to learn to take different types of photos, like a news photo or a portrait.
Those basic photography skills came in handy when I got my first job out of college as a journalist in 2009, and often took pictures to go along with my news stories. From there, friends and family asked if I could take their pictures, and from there started my photography career.
Fast forward to today, where I photograph family portraits, weddings, quinceaneras, and birthday parties. By photographing events like birthday parties, the main problem I’m trying to solve is to give my clients opportunities to sit back and enjoy themselves while I capture candid photos of their event. I don’t want them to have to worry about relying on their phone to take pictures while also having to make sure their party is going perfect and trying to do a million things at once. With me as their photographer, they can enjoy visiting and celebrating with their guests while I get some memorable pictures of them and their guests.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing my clients reactions when I deliver their photos. Many of them are willing to provide a review of my work, and I’m always so humbled at the things they write related to how much they love the photos and that I understood the types of photos they wanted (usually candid), and they look back on them and smile.
It’s also rewarding when a client loves my work so much that they hire me again and again for their events, and refer me to their friends and family, and I have great experiences with them as my clients as well. For me, that’s a mission accomplished.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
One thing I’ve done is learn from other great photographers who are far more experienced than me. I enrolled in a photography mentorship program by one of my photographer idols, who provides recorded courses I can learn from, but also provides one-on-one mentorship to help my business grow. I also follow many other photographers and learn from them as well, and watch a lot of YouTube videos on photography to improve my craft.
