We were lucky to catch up with Julian Bell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Julian , appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I think success is based on your personal vision. You define how you will measure your own progress. My success is based on my growth, if I can look back 6 months from now and see that I’ve improved then I’m successful. However, if I look back and I can’t see any growth I need to reevaluate my next steps.
I’m blessed with talent and ability now, but if I don’t continue to build on this momentum, what is the point?
Julian , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into the photo and video business because I was tired of waiting on others. I have my own ideas and goals that I’d like to chase. But if I’m always waiting on someone else to bring the equipment, the experience, or the knowledge I will blink and my life will go by before I’ve taken my first step.
I provide professional photo, video production, and social media collaboration services. I make content for others to enjoy, I love the experience of creating a story that others can relate to.
I’m most proud of watching how excited my clients are about my work once delivered. It’s a blessing to see others have a sense of pride in themselves.
One of the biggest things that set me apart from others is my attitude and personality. I’m always open to a new challenge and I find the humor in the small things. I take pride in being able to make light of a tough situation in a project. If we don’t find somewhere to laugh we’ll just end up crying.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I think the biggest resource for me is the local community. There are so many people around you with an absolute wealth of knowledge. You’d be amazed at some of the things and techniques that I’ve learned all because I was curious enough to ask a few questions.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A big lesson I had to unlearn was that expensive equals better. In my industry, it’s all about your knowledge and creativity. Your personality and knowledge are always shown through your work. If you have the “best” equipment but absolutely no idea how to work with it then the final product will reflect that.
I know hearing that you have to actually read the manual and watch some tutorials may sound boring to some people. (Sometimes it is.) But having that knowledge saves you a LOT of time when you’re working and you have a malfunction.
